Background:The prevalence of alcohol dependence has gradually increased in recent years.Patients with alcohol dependence suffer from psychological changes and the damage for family and social function, while their spouses have also been greatly affected with mental health.Researches have shown that the psychological problems of spouse of alcohol-dependent patients are serious and ubiquitous, and their quality of lives is also significantly lower than that of the general population.Coping style is the cognitive or behavior pattern used by individual in the face of pressure, which plays an important role in physical and mental health. There are little studies on coping style of spouse of alcohol-dependent patients in China. Objective:To describe the coping style and quality of life of the spouses of alcohol-dependent patients;to confirm the correlation between their coping style and quality of life.Method:A total of 118 spouses of alcohol-dependent patients hospitalized in Peking University Sixth Hospital were enrolled in this study.Three questionnaires were used, including the information questionnaire,Coping Style Questionnaire(CSQ)and the Short-Form 36 Health Survey Scale(SF-36).Spearman correlation was used to analyze the correlation between the coping style of the spouse of alcohol-dependent patients and the quality of life.Result:(1)The average scores of coping style in different 6 methods were listed from high to low:problem-solving(0.68±0.22),rationalization(0.58±0.19),withdrawal(0.57±0.21),illusion(0.55±0.22),help-seeking(0.47±0.26),self-accusation(0.41±0.28).The mean scores of rationalization,withdrawal,illusion,help-seeking,self-accusation were higher than the norms(P<0.001).The spouses of different education level, average income, course of the disease in patient, times of hospitalization of the patient had different coping style(P<0.05),(2)The quality of their lives got 64.38±18.71 points which was in middle level. The mean scores of role-physical,body pain, general health, vitality, social function, emotional function, mental health dimension and the total score were lower than the norm(P<0.001).The spouses of different per capita monthly income had different scores of quality of life(P<0.05).(3)The coping style of problem-solving was positively correlated with the quality of life(r=0.24,P<0.01),and the coping styles of self-accusation,illusion,withdrawal and rationalization were negatively correlated with the quality of life(r=-0.4,P<0.01;r=-0.24,P<0.01;r=-0.28,P<0.01;r=-0.30,P<0.01).Help-seeking had no obvious relationship with the quality of life(r=0.03,P>0.05).Conclusions:The most possibly adopted coping styles of spouses of alcohol-dependent patients were listed as follow:problem-solving,rationalization,withdrawal,illusion,help-seeking and self-accusation.Compared with the norms, the coping styles of rationalization,illusion,withdrawal,help-seeking and self-accusation were used more frequently by the spouses of alcohol-dependent patients. The spouses of different education level, average income, course of the disease in patient, times of hospitalization of the patient had different coping style. The spouses of alcohol-dependent patients have the lower quality of life than the norm and it’s moderate.Spouses of different per capita monthly income had different level of quality of life.Spouses who used the coping style of problem solving had high quality of life whereas those who used the coping styles of rationalization, withdrawal, illusion and self-accusation had lower quality of life.In the clinical work,we suggest medical staff guide them to use more effective coping styles to keep both physically and mentally healthy and improve the quality of life.
