Objective: To study the associations of cognition impairment with changes of sleeping structure for epilepsy patients by comparing the polysomnography outcomes of the group of epilepsy patients with cognitive disorders(EC group),the group of simplex epilepsy(E group),and the control. Methods: The study sample was consisted of 56 epilepsy patients and 28 healthy individuals as the control.According to the evaluation results of MoCA questionnaires, the 56 epilepsy patients has been assigned to either the EC or the E group.By comparing the polysomnography outcomes of the EC,the E,and the control, have the associations of cognition impairment with changes of sleeping structure for epilepsy patients revealed. Results: 30 patients were distributed to the EC group with average MoCA score of 20.53±2.73,while the other 26 were assigned to the E group with average MoCA score of 28.50±1.30;the average MoCA score for the control was 29.14±0.71.The results of the analysis of variance between multiple groups revealed that both subentry scores and the aggregated score from the MoCA test for the EC were significantly lower compared with the E and the control(P<0.05);but there was no statistical significance between the E and the control.Compared with the C group, the EC group had the significantly lower age of first-episode,longer course, higher seizure frequency, and higher rate of generalized seizure.Mental condition analysis indicated that the Beck Depression Inventory-II(BDI-II)and FS-14 for the EC group were significantly higher than those for the E group and control;the Self-rating Anxiety Score(SAS)and the FS-14 for the E group were significantly higher than the control. In the polysomnography outcomes, the EC group had the significantly longer time of Wake after Sleep Onset(WASO),lower Total Sleep Time(TST),lower Sleeping Efficacy(SE),longer Rapid Eye Movement Latency(REML),Sleeping Latency(SL),and None-REM1(N1)period,and shorter N3 period time compared with the E group and the control. The ratio of N1 and N2 were significantly increased while that of N3 was decreased.Surveillance for unfavorable incidence revealed significantly higher Systematic Sleeping Shifts(SSS),SSS per hour(SSS/h),N2 transformation(N2Ts),N2 Ts per hour(N2Ts/h),N2 Ts ratio(N2Ts/SSS),Apnea Hypopnea Index(AHI),Periodic Limb Movement per hour(PLMs/h),Awaken Index(AI),and lower Oxygen Saturation(SpO2).Conclusion: Cognitive function of EC group were significantly declined compared with healthy people;their sleeping time and sleeping efficacy were also significantly decreased and adverse incidences increased in comparison with the healthy control.Among which, compared with simplex epilepsy patients, epilepsy patients with MoCA evaluation identified cognitive impairment had significantly disordered sleeping structure, decreased sleeping time and sleeping efficacy, and increased undesirable incidences.
