| Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum Ghrelin levels and glucose tolerance, insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity in adolescents. Methods: During the period of 2010-2011,763 adolescents aged 11-16 years were selected randomly from Liaoyang city by random stratified cluster sampling method. They were asked to complete a questionnaire and received a complete physical examination, including mesuring height, weight.Fasting venous blood samples were collected for fasting plasma glucose(FPG),triglyceride(TG),Serum concentrations of uric acid(Uric acid),Hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c)and other biochemical indicators.Serum Ghrelin level was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.According to the tertile of Ghrelin concentration,it is divided into three groups, and analyzed.74 of them were selected for oral glucose insulin release test(OGIRT).Results:1.The level of serum Ghrelin in girls was significantly higher than that in boys(45.22±22.37mg/L vs.41.87±21.42 mg/L,P=0.035).2.After OGIRT,the levels of AUCglucose and ΔAUCglucose tended to decline gradually with the increase of Ghrelin level, while the corresponding insulin levels decreased in both AUCinsulin andΔAUCinsulin.Correlation analysis adjusted for age and gender showed that fasting Ghrelin levels were negatively correlated with 120 min glucose,120 min serum insulin,180 min serum insulin,AUCinsulin and ΔAUCinsulin after glucose loading.3.Both correlation analysis and linear regression analysis showed that there was a correlation between Ghrelin and compound insulin sensitivity index(CISI).Conlusions:Serum Ghrelin levels in adolescents were significantly correlated with glucose tolerance, insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity, suggesting that high levels of Ghrelin is a protective factor for adolescent from metabolic syndrome. |
