Objective:The aim of this study is to explore the risk factors of type2 diabetes mellitus among the elderly population over 65 years age, analyze the correlation between the level of blood glucose and plasma homocysteine, explore the interaction between other risk factors and plasma homocysteine levels,to study the relationship of diabetic complications with the level of homocysteine,to offer the scientific basis for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus among the elderly population. Methods:A case-control study was applied to conduct a questionnaire survey, physical measurement and laboratory examination among 100 elderly cases with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 100 elderly people without diabetes selected from People’s Hospital of Hunan Province during June to October 2017.The datas were analyzed by SPSS21.0 statistical software package. The risk factors of type 2 diabetes mellitus were analyzed by non-conditional logistic regression analysis. The interaction between other risk factors and plasma homocysteine were analyzed by logistic regression model. The spearman correlation test was used to analyze the correlation between blood glucose levels and homocysteine as well as correlation between diabetic complications and homocysteine level.Results:(1)Drinking,higher BUN level, higher HCY level were the risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus among elderly people(OR=16.599,95%CI=1.764~156.155;OR=3.239,95%CI=1.197~8.767;OR=3.132,95%CI=1.328~7.386).(2)The interaction were found between homocysteine level with smoking index, drinking,BUN level.(3)It was found that plasma homocysteine level was positively correlated with Hb A1 c level(r=0.287,P=0.004),and it was found that homocysteine level were positively correlated with diabetic nephropathy and diabetic peripheral neuropathy(r_s=0.400,P=0.000;r_s=0.262,P=0.008).(4)The Hb A1 c level, and the prevalence of diabetic nephropathy and diabetic peripheral neuropathy were increased by elevated Hcy level(F=8.408,P=0.005;x~2=17.004,P=0.000;x~2=7.423,P=0.006)among elderly people with diabetes. Conclusions:Drinking, high BUN,high HCY were the major influencing factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus among elderly people. The interaction were found between homocysteine level with smoking index, drinking and BUN level among elderly people with diabetes.Plasma homocysteine level was positively correlated with HbA1 c level.Homocysteine level were positively correlated with diabetic nephropathy and diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
