ObjectiveThe objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of oral disease intervention on children aged 10 years old for 2 years in Jingxi county and explore a suitable oral health promotion model for the minority areas of Guangxi,China.MethodsThe sample were selected from 10 years old school children in Jingxi county and Debao county in Guangxi.Baseline survey were conducted in 2011.Then Jingxi as the experimental group,were given intervention for 2 years(2011-2012),Debao as the control group,without any intervention,after the baseline survey.The data had collected by using oral examination and questionnaire survey.The SPSS(16.0)were used to analysis the data.Dental status and the changes of oral health related knowledge,attitude and behavior were described.The differences of the results between the experimental group and control group before and after intervention were analysis by using chi-square test and T test.Results1.The general status of subjects709 children in Jingxi and 429 children in Debao were conducted oral examination in 2011 and 2013,the composition of gender had no significant difference.497 questionnaires in Jingxi and 402 questionnaires in Debao were collected in 2011 and 2013,the composition of gender had no significant difference.2.Oral health status1)The prevalence of dental caries experience in Jingxi and Debao respectively was 64.6%,64.3%in 2011,and respectively was 80.4%,84.6%in 2013,with no significant difference.The growth of children's permanent teeth caries in jingxi(29.0%)was slower than debao(32.2%)after the intervention.2)The DMFT was 1.40 and 2.91 respectively in Jingxi and Debao was 1.66 and 3.41 in 2011 and 2013.Jingxi were lower then Debao with significant difference.Compared with children who had 24.4%growth of DMFT in Jingxi,Debao(19.6%)was slower after the intervention.3)The incidence of dental caries was not significant difference between Jingxi(31.2%)and Debao(31.5%).When compared with children who had new dental caries ?4 in Jingxi(7.0%)was lower then Debao(8.1%).4)The prevalence of first permanent dental caries experience in Jingxi and Debao was 62.9%,62.7%respectively in 2011(P>0.05).A lower proportion of children in Jingxi had first permanent dental caries compared with Debao in 2013(76.4%vs 82.3%),there was significant difference among these two group.5)The percentage of surfaces of caries which were filled in Jingxi and Debao was 6.3%and 4.6%respectively in 2011(P>0.05),and was 16.1%?9.2%respectively in2013,Jingxi was higher than that of Debao(P<0.05).6)The prevalence of gingival bleeding in Jingxi(23.4%,31.7%)were higher then Debao(12.1%,21.4%)in 2011 and 2013,with significant difference.Compared with children who had 35.5%growth of gingival bleeding detection rate in Jingxi,Debao(73.1%)was faster after the intervention.The debris index in Jingxi and Debao was 1.31,1.26 respectively in 2011(P>0.05).The debris index in Jingxi was 1.28 lower than Debao(1.37)in 2013,there was significant difference among these two groups.3.The changes of Oral health knowledge,attitude and behavior1)The 30.6%subjects who thought the fluoride toothpaste was good for teeth in Jingxi in 2013 higher compared to that in 2011(14.9%)(P<0.05).Oral health knowledge level of children in Debao had no significant difference during 2 years.2)The percentage of subjects who thought "The prevention of dental disease depends on themselves first" and "oral health is very important to the quality of life" were right from 85.5%,75.9%in 2011 increased to 90.1%,81.5%in 2013(P<0.05),while oral health attitude of children in Debao had no significant difference during 2 years.3)The percentage of subjects who brushed their teeth by using fluoride toothpaste was higher in 2013 than in 2011(15.7%vs 8.2%)(P<0.05).73.0%children who brush their tooth>2/day in Jingxi in 2013 but 44.9%in 2011(P<0.05).Dietary habit had no obvious improvement.Oral health behavior of children in Debao had no obvious improvement.4)The 74.8%subjects suffered from toothache experience in Jingxi in 2011.However,this figure had declined to 66.8%in 2013(P<0.05).The percentage of subjects whose oral problem impact on school and communication from 29.6%,26.8%to 19.3%,17.9%(P<0.05).The percentage of subjects suffered from oral health impact on chewing from 58.8%in 2011 increased to 68.0%in 2013(P<0.05).There was not significant difference for two years in Debao.Children who visited dentist in Jingxi in 2013(52.1%)more than 2011(39.8%)(P<0.05).However children who visited dentist in Debao was not significant difference.ConclusionOral health promotion model in Jingxi could improve oral health status and oral health knowledge level of children,change oral health attitudes and behavior of children.But the effect of interventions were not significant,and it should further perfection and improvement,and long-term monitoring.
