ObjectiveThrough a questionnaire survey on students from two colleges in Nanning,Guangxi Province, the objective of the present study is to understand their knowledge, attitude and practice in respect to hepatitis B virus, discuss its influencing factors and provide bases for contents and methods suitable for hepatitis B virus health education according to the characteristics of college students in order to carry out hepatitis B health education in an effective way.MethodsTaking undergraduate students in Guangxi Medical University and Guangxi University as the research objects,multi-stage stratified cluster sampling was conducted. The survey instrument used was a self-administered and self-developed questionnaire. The questionnaire considered the general characteristics of the respondents(such as sex, age, major, grade, nationality, etc.),as well as knowledge, attitude and practice questions about the prevention and treatment of hepatitis B.A database was set up by using Epidate 3.0 software.Double entry, validation and logical inspection were conducted on these data to rule out unqualified questionnaires.Chi-square test,chi-square test,t test,one-way ANOVA,rank sum test and correlation analysis were conducted by using SPSS 19.0 software.Results1.The general conditions of respondentsA total of 1800 questionnaires were given out and 1596 effective questionnaires were collected, with a collection rate of 88.77%.Among these respondents, there were 624 males(39.1%)and 972 females(60.9%),with a male/female ratio of 0.64:1.There were 1092 medical students(68.4%)and 504 non-medical students(31.6%);there were 456 freshmen(28.6%),467 sophomores(29.3%),349 juniors(21.9%)and 324 seniors(20.3%).There were 974 Han students(61.0%)and 622 minority students(39.0%).2.College students' awareness and knowledge of hepatitis B66.4%of college students believed that "Guangxi is a high incidence area of hepatitis B",and the rates of correct answers to questions about"whether hepatitis B can be healed" and "whether those infected with hepatitis B show symptoms" were only 36.4%and 13.1%respectively.Only 54.5%and 42.5%college students had a correct understanding of indexes HBsAg and anti-HBs,while 79.3%and 64.3%college students believed that recipients of hepatitis B virus(HBV)contaminated blood and those having sex with patients with chronic HBV infection without taking protective measures would be infected with HBV respectively. The rates of correct answers to questions about "drinking and eating together or sharing eating utensils with patients with chronic HBV infection" and"kissing patients with chronic HBV infection" were only 36.4%and 13.1%respectively.32.5%of college students thought that drinking unclean water or eating unclean food would result in HBV chronic infection. In terms of prevention measures for HBV,only 13.6%and 29.4%of college students could give correct answers to two questions of"washing off food and cooking thoroughly and avoiding drinking polluted water" and "avoiding drinking or eating together or sharing eating utensils with patients with chronic HBV infection".The average total score of HBV prevention and treatment of male respondents was 10.90±4.10,lower than 11.80±3.74 of female respondents(t=4.52,P=0.00);the average total score of Han students was 11.63±3.84,higher than 11.17±3.99 of female respondents;the average total score of medical students was 12.59±3.64,higher than 8.97±3.27 of non-medical students(t= 19.06,P=0.00);the average total score of students was increased from freshmen to seniors, showing statistically significant differences(F=56.97,P=0.02).3.College students' attitude towards hepatitis B38.1%of college students minded or did mind eating with HBV carriers;41.0%of college students minded or did mind living with HBV carriers;27.7%of college students minded or did mind working with HBV carriers;76.7%of college students agreed or did agree to provide legislative protection to HBV carriers;20.0%college students agreed or did agree units to refuse HBV carriers as employees.College students'attitude toward hepatitis B varied with different sexes, nationalities, majors and grades, showing statistically significant differences(P<0.05).4.College students' health practice concerning hepatitis BAmong the college students in this investigation, the reported vaccination rate of hepatitis B was 70.6%,while the reported whole course vaccination(three injections)rate of hepatitis B was 33.0%.The vaccination rate varied with different sexes, nationalities, majors and grades, showing statistically significant differences(P<0.05).If infected with HBV,87.7%of college students would go to normal hospital to seek reasonable treatment from specialists,12.1%of them would listen to small ads to find private clinic for medical treatment,13.4%of them would buy drugs by themselves based on the information from online media, and 30.5%of them showed that they would not tell anyone except their families. The treatment methods of college students after HBV infection varied with different sexes, different majors and different grades, showing statistically significant differences(P<0.05).5.Correlations between college students' knowledge, attitude and practice in respect to hepatitis BThe score of knowledge about hepatitis B(K)among college students was positively correlated with the score of positive attitude toward hepatitis B(A)and the score of positive practice related to hepatitis B(P),and these scores had statistical significances(p=0.00).The scores of knowledge about hepatitis B(K)among medical and non-medical students were positively correlated with their scores of positive attitude toward hepatitis B(A)and scores of positive practice related to hepatitis B(P)respectively, and these scores had statistical significances(p=0.00).6.Sources of college students' knowledge about hepatitis B Among all respondents, medical staff(54.3%),professional books(46.9%)and school health education(41.4%)took the first three places among all sources of their knowledge about hepatitis B.Among medical students, medical staff(56.9%),professional books(56.0%)and school health education(51.6%)took the first three places among all sources of their knowledge about hepatitis B.Among non-medical students, medical staff(48.8%),TV or Internet(35.3%)and professional books(27.0%)took the first three places among all sources of their knowledge about hepatitis B.Conclusions1.College students, whether medical or non-medical,have little knowledge about the prevention and treatment of hepatitis B.The majority of students lack of systematic and comprehensive knowledge about the prevention and treatment of hepatitis B.2.Some college students have misunderstanding and discrimination on hepatitis B and hepatitis B patients and even fear to get hepatitis B.3.The vaccination rate of hepatitis B among college students was not high and the whole course vaccination rate of hepatitis B was low. They deal with HBV infection in wrong ways.4.Health education can improve college students' knowledge level of hepatitis B and correct their wrong attitude and practice in regard to hepatitis B.Internet learning is an approach of hepatitis B health education worthy of popularization and application.
