Research On Western Medicine Translated Words In Modern Chinese Medicine Journals

The research interest is the translation of western medicine terminology in traditional Chinese medicine journals in last years of Qing dynasty and the republic of china. And the research materials are the traditional Chinese medicine journals from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China (1912-1949).Factors causing the unification of different translation versions have been analyzed, and the academic influence of Western Medicine translation on Modern Chinese medicine has been discussed.According to the statistics, there are 50 modern Chinese medicine journals. The transliterated words and free translated words are the main word formation approaches. Free translated words accounted for the majority, and they are mainly about the name of diseases, anatomical sites, and physiological phenomenon. So most of them are nouns. Both internal and external factors can affect the selection of translation versions.The internal factors include:(1) the transliterated words are not ideographic, but only record the sounds, which will cause communication barrier of the target language, so most transliterated words have been eliminated. This is the reason why the use of the transliterated words was reduced. (2) Characters in Japanese are consistent with Chinese characters on the character pattern and ideographic function. And it will not cause deviation in understanding, and also be very convenient, so a lot of defective translation versions in Chinese were replaced by Chinese characters in Japanese. (3) The gradient law from lower to higher stage can be applied in the development of everything. With the changing of words reference, the translation version also changes. With the well-understanding of objectives, the words reference is determined, so is the translation version.The external reasons include:(1) Appropriate spread and translation strategies will accelerate the dissemination speed of the translated words. Furthermore, that will also promote the unity of different translation versions. (2) Audiences make positive choices by upholding the economical and practical principles. (3) Coastal and inland regional differences will lead to differentiation of translated words. Areas with fast flow of information will gradually assimilate the information-poor regions.The impact of the western medicine translation on Chinese medicine mainly reflected in:(1) Chinese medicine practitioners gave birth to different academic perspectives and clinical thinking due to different translations of a term in the same concept in Western medicine. (2) The wide acception of translated terms by Chinese medicine practitioners promotes the exploration of integration of the two kinds of medicine from different origins.
