The results show that more than half of the aviation accidents were caused by pilot under high mental workload and high stress levels. And in all aviation accidents, the probability of accidents at the approach and landing phase is high. With the development of civil aviation in China,HUD is becoming more and more widely used, but the use of new equipments may cause the pilot's mental workload too high or too low,and it may even affect flight safety. Therefore, this paper analyses the relevant airworthiness regulations from the point of view of pilots' mental workload, and conducts a research on mental workload assessment of pilot by using HUD during approach and landing phase. It can provide references for rational use and design of HUD,optimization of mental workload distribution of pilots in cockpit and reasonable design of flight mission in approach and landing phase. In order to carry out the research on the mental workload assessment for pilots when using HUD in approach and landing phase, the mainly research works are as the following:(1)The development trend and advantages of HUD in the field of civil aviation were described. The possible security issues by using HUD were summarized such as visual masking.(2)The airworthiness provisions and advisory circulars were analysed and interpreted, which are related to mental workload in cockpit human factors. The importance of mental workload in the cockpit human factors were analysed. The conformity verification methods of airworthiness provisions were summarized, which are related to the pilots' workload. The research status, existing deficiencies and research trends of mental workload assessment were summarized.(3)An experiment was designed and conducted to study the mental workload of performing tasks using HUD and HDD respectively during the approach and landing phases. We can get the result by analyzing the physiological indexes, subjective indexes collected in the experiment and combining with the previous research results.(4)An experiment was designed and carried out to research the effect of different HUD contrast ratio on the pilot's mental workload, setting four different HUD contrast ratio as the experimental variables.Analyzing of physiological and subjective indexes and combining with previous research results, the changes of pilot's mental workload can be obtained at different HUD contrast ratio conditions.(5)The evaluation model of VACP and W/INDEX was established and validated. The input of this model is the score of the subjective evaluation tables.Through the calculation of the model formula, the trend of mental workload at different times during the approach and landing phase can be obtained. The reliability of the model was verified by comparing and analyzing the results of the model and the results of the above two experiments.
