In a global context, it is of extreme importance to establish a positive image of the country, as it relates to the influence of the country in the international arena and promotes its development. The media are an important means of creating and broadcasting country's public image, especially in the field of international communication. China and Russia are neighboring countries, having close cooperation in economics and trade, culture and education. However, Russian people might show cautious attitude towards China. In this situation, it is important to set a positive image of China in the mind of Russian citizens. The correct understanding of China's public image among the Russian nationals can stimulate improvement of the Russian public's general perception of China. The present research paper combines qualitative and quantitative research methods, and sets its goal to illustrate the national public image of China as presented in the Russian media, and discusses the ways to improve the public image of China. The research concludes that the newspaper "Izvestia" shows a generally neutral attitude in its China-related reports, giving neither praise nor disgrace to China, and focuses on various aspects of cooperation between China and Russia as well as on China's economic development. The proportion of news discussing other topics is relatively small. The public image of China is generally positive, yet appears to be one-dimensional. The image of Chinese people depicts them as being positive and optimistic, on the one hand, but not very cultural, frequently breaking laws and regulations, and illegally employed persons, on the other hand. When promoting the national image of China, Russian media reports mainly follow Russia's national interests, therefore generally praise the Sino-Russian partnership, but stress China's negative social, hygiene and environmental issues. Thus, it is necessary to stimulate an international cultural integration of China, create a more comprehensive understanding of China and Chinese people, and create a positive public image of China overseas. The related research shows that Chinese media produce not a very strong response in international audiences, therefore it is important to intensify China's international communication efforts in order to influence foreign audiences' opinion about China.
