The Study Of The Female Schools In The Local Field

The research object of this dissertation is the Wu Ben female school founded in 1902 in Shanghai,mainly use of female school records,female newspapers and other materials during Late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic era.We try to explore interaction between the Chinese female schools and local society of Shanghai from several levels including the origin of thought,the rise and operation mechanism,the campus life and life choice of female students.Chinese female school in the modern Shanghai was born out the female tradition of the gentry class in Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The modern transformation of traditional women's thought and the local transformation of foreign thought accelerate the practice of female thought.The Wu Ben female school was born in this context and had been in the education reform of New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty at the beginning of its rise.To improve the family,cultivate good wife and mother as the main purpose,the Wu Ben female school has the characteristics of old and new.In the early Republic of China,Wu Ben female school was run by the government for various reasons and adapted to the trend of strengthening the local education administration system gradually by adjustment and transformation.Many symbolic resources were used to internalize the requirements of the state and society for the training of female students in campus life,which constituting the identity of female students.This group consciousness internalized into a closer life community in the life of female students.Through the case study of the Wu Ben female school,we found that Chinese female school in Shanghai as a continuation of the cultural capital of gentry class has been in the field of local power since the rise and development.Since the late Qing Dynasty,the localization of study affairs demonstrated that the state power was further divided while the power of local gentry was rising.In this process,local gentry had accumulated a large amount of social capital through education and local self-govemment.However,the emergence of student groups and the rise of student movement leads to the division of gentry,which make Chinese female school showing the trend of diversification and popularization.
