On Chinese-english Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

As an important medium of cross-cultural communication,subtitle translation should be attached much attention in terms of its practical and theoretical studies.High-quality subtitle translation can attract more audience and better convey cultures while poor one may cause misunderstanding,which deviates from the purpose of communication.Therefore,the study of subtitle translation is of great significance.Under the theoretical framework of Skopostheorie,the author will make a case study of the bilingual subtitles of Journey of Civilization,a high-end interview program broadcast on CCTV-4.Considering the authoritative channel representing the highest level of China's television,plus those distinguished guests invited to the interview and insightful topics discussed in every episode,subtitle translation of the program is of relatively higher quality and worthy of studying.Through literature review and case study,the author draws from the practicability of officially translated subtitles and concludes three principles for Chinese-English subtitle translation.First,foreignizing translation strategies,such as transliteration and literal translation,need to be adopted when translating unique and crucial cultural information,thus best maintaining the original connotation and minimizing comprehension difficulties.Second,domesticating translation strategies,including inversion,addition,and reduction,need to be adopted where there are distinct linguistic and cultural differences between the source and target texts,thus achieving coherence in translation.Third,free translation strategies,including interpretative translation and substitution,are usually adopted when it comes to similar expressions in the source and target texts,thus bringing out the real message behind words within the limits of time and space and getting closer to the intent of the author.In this thesis,the author intends to: verify the applicability of Skopostheorie in guiding Chinese-English subtitle translation;provide some experience of successful translation for Chinese Culture Going Global Strategy;and add to relevant studies on Chinese-English subtitle translation.It is hoped that the thesis would provide new research perspective and useful reference to the practice and research of ChineseEnglish subtitle translation.
