Literary translation has always been a tough issue in the translation circle because its object is literary works which usually contain a lot of artistic techniques.This paper intends to explore the reproduction of defamiliarization in literary translation by analyzing Zhu Shenghao's translation of The Merchant of Vetnice in detail. Defamiliarization put forward by Russian formalist Shklovsky, as an artistic theory, is meant to arouse readers' unconsciousness caused by habit. The significance of this paper lies in two aspects: firstly, Shakespeare is a world-renown master of literature whose works contain many defamiliarized techniques; secondly, Zhu Shenghao creatively used some defamiliarized techniques in his translation. This paper has explained how to reproduce defamiliarization and creatively invent defamiliarized expression by analyzing Zhu Shenghao's translation.Introduction gives a brief account about the research background, stating clear the significance and research method of the paper.Chapter two expounds on the defamiliarization theory.Chapter three is a literature review on the study of defamiliarization theory at home and abroad, as well as a literature review on Zhu Shenghao's translation of The Merchant of Venice.Chapter four, which is the most important part of this thesis, elaborates Zhu Shenghao's reproduction and creation of defamiliarization from the phonetic level,diction, the syntax, text level and the rhetoric devices.Chapter five is the conclusion part which points out that the use of defamiliarized techniques makes the text appealing and awakens readers' ossified consciousness.
