ObjectiveA national survey was conducted to assess perceptions and barriers regarding Kangaroo Care(KC)in China.MethodsThe self-designed general data questionnaire and Chinese version of kangaroo Care Questionnaires were used to investigate the nurses in ICU nurses from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China. The data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 with descriptive analysis and chi square test.ResultsA total of 861 valid questionnaires were collected in this survey.About 47.73%of the respondents reported practicing KC in their neonatal intensive care units(NICUs).The kangaroo care group(n = 411)was more aware of kangaroo care than the no-kangaroo care group(n = 450).Major barriers to practicing KC for certain types of infants were infant safety concerns,as well as reluctance by families, physicians and nurses to initiate or participate in KC.ConclusionsKangaroo care has not been widely carried out in our country. The nurses in neonatal intensive care unit have certain cognition on kangaroo care, but there are still many obstacles.
