Reliability And Validity And Clinical Practice Of The Chinese Version Of Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire

Objective: 1.To translate the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire(RCSQ)into Chinese and test the reliability and validity of Chinese version of RCSQ(RCSQ-C)in ICU patients.Analyse the feasibility of the scale and provide a suitable instrument for sleep evaluation in critically ill patients.2.To describe the present conditions and influencing factors of sleep quality in critically ill patients,in order to provide theoretical basis on intervention strategies.Method: Firstly,we consulted Dr.Richards by e-mail,who is the original developer of the RCSQ,and he gave us permission.The original RCSQ was translated and cross-culturally adaptated according to west scale revising and evaluation procedure.The process was composed of forward-translation,synthesis,back-translation,expert consultation and pre-test.Secondly,a total of 106 ICU patients were investigated with the Chinese version of RCSQ,in which 44 patients completed RCSQ and St Mary's Hospital Sleep Questionnaire to evaluate congruent validity.To evaluate the interrater reliability,40 ICU patients and their nurses simultaneously completed the Chinese version of RCSQ.Additionally,internal consistency,content validity,item analysis and discrimination,construct validity of the RCSQ were assessed.The factors associated with patients' sleep in ICU were analyzed using SPSS 17.0.Result: 1.Translation of the RCSQ from English to Chinese was performed according to the guidelines.The results showed that five items were linguistically-and culturally-relevant to Chinese ICU people.In the process of translation,no item required great modification to fit into the Chinese cultural context.2.The content validity for the scale was 0.84.The Cronbach's ? of the RCSQ-C was 0.889.One factor was extracted with cumulative contribution rate of 69.834%.The intraclass correlation coefficients of patient-nurse ranged from 0.315 to 0.609.The results showed that high and low groups of all items were statistically significant(P <0.05).Indicating that the RCSQ-C have a good degree of discrimination.The correlation coefficients between the result from the item scores of SMH and the RCSQ were 0.504 to 0.856.3.The mean score of sleep quality was(65.50±8.45).Univariate analysis showed that the difference was statistically significant between the different levels of noise and the quality of sleep before hospitalization(P <0.05).Multiple regression analysis indicated that noise and thequality of sleep before hospitalization were predictive factors of sleep quality.Conclusion: 1.The RCSQ-C has good reliability and validity,and could be used for the sleep quality comprehensive evaluation for ICU patients under the Chinese cultural background.2.The level of sleep quality for most ICU patients were moderate or low,the sleep quality before hospitalization and noise were influencing factors of sleep quality for ICU patients.
