Objective To document secular changes in the death causes of residents in Xiqing, Tianjin, to analyze cause-specific death rates and their ranking in different sub-populations over years, so to provide basic data for use by policy-makers in formulating local priorities in disease prevention and control in Xiqing, Tianjin. Methods This study used data on death reported directly from medical institutions at various levelsin the District of Xiqing, Tianjin from 2009 to 2013 while the base population data were retrieved from Xiqing Bureau of Public Security. Causes of death were classified according to the internationalclassification of diseases(ICD-10) by the principal discharge diagnosis and mortality rates were standardized to the distribution of the population of China in 2000. We chose the mortality surveillance system in Tianjin V2.0 for mortality surveillance data entry, review and summarization. All the statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 19.0. Chi-square analysis and linear regression were used to obtain descriptive data. Results From 2009 to 2013, crude death rates were 635.69 per 100,000, 662.10 per 100,000, 671.75 per 100,000, 668.95 per 100,000 and 617.00 per 100,000, separately; aged-standardized mortality rates were 456.64 per 100,000, 481.11 per 100,000, 473.60 per 100,000, 468.75 per 100,000 and 417.72 per 100,000. Men had higher all-cause death rates than women in all the age groups(all the Ps <0.05). For the years of 2009-2010, the top 5 principal causes of death in Xiqing were cerebrovascular diseases, heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, injuries and poisoning. For 2011-2013, heart disease was the first cause of death, followed by cerebrovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease, injuries and poisoning. For 2009-2013, death constitutions from the top three malignant tumors were constant and they were lung cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer. Colorectal cancer and anus cancer only ranked 5 in the death from cancerafter 2011; the proportions of death from breast cancer and leukemia were on the rise in recent two years. Conclusions Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and cancer were the main causes of deathof the permanent residents in Xiqing, Tianjin. Our findings suggest that priorities should be given to prevention and control of occurrence of these diseases and to active treatment of patients with these diseases, so as to reduce the disease burden in Xiqing, Tianjin.
