Objective: To investigate the relationship between the serum uric acid and cognitive function in patients with cardiovascular disease.Method: A case-control study is adopted. Inpatients data were collected from February 2015 to December in the first affiliated hospital of Fujian medical university, and Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) was used to assess the patients,cognitive function. 122 cases which MMSE score less than 26 was the cognitive impairment group and 118 cases which MMSE score from 26 to 30 was control group.The general information, laboratory and cardiovascular date were compared between the two groups. According to the quartile of serum uric acid level,the inpatients were divided into the first quartile array(n = 60), the second quartile array(n = 60), the third quartile array(n = 59) and the forth quartile array(n = 61). The incidence of cognitive dysfunction and MMSE score were compared among the four groups.Results:(1) The serum uric acid, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, MMSE score of cognitive impairment group were lower than that of the control group(serum uric acid: 319.5 ± 49.1 than 335.3 ± 45.7 μmol/L, P < 0.05; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol: 1.07±0.29 than 1.17±0.42 mmol/L, P < 0.05; MMSE score: 22.39 ± 2.21 than 28.11 ± 1.33, P < 0.05),while low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, pulse wave velocity, carotid intima-media thickness and age were higher(low-density lipoprotein cholesterol: 2.93 ± 1.08 than 2.60 ± 0.95 mmol/L, P < 0.05; pulse wave velocity: 1813.8 ± 348.6 than 1722.6 ± 327.3 cm/s, P < 0.05; carotid intima-media thickness: 0.096 ± 0.013 than 0.092 ± 0.013 mm, P < 0.05; age: 69.93 ± 6.94 than 67.15 ± 7.59 years, P < 0.05).(2) Pearson correlation analysis showed that MMSE score was negative correlated with age, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, pulse wave velocity and carotid intima-media thickness, but it was positive correlated with cultural level,serum uric acid, high-density lipoproteins cholesterol(all P < 0.05),which was the same as single factor logistic regression analysis.(3) The multiple linear regression analysis showed that cultural level(OR = 0.458; 95% CI: 0.321~0.601), age(OR = 1.012; 95% CI: 1.006 ~ 1.036), serum uric acid(OR = 0.997; 95% CI: 0.988 ~ 0.999) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(OR = 1.387; 95% CI: 1.076 ~ 1.843) were associated with cognitive function(P < 0.05).(4) The incidence of cognitive dysfunction had no significant difference among the four quartile groups(53.3%, 53.3%, 49.2%, 53.3%, P = 0.1), while it was gradually decreasing with the increase of serum uric acid. The MMSE score of the first quartile was lower than that of the fourth quartile(24.28 ± 3.62 than 26.27 ± 3.03, P < 0.05).Conclusion: Low serum uric acid,low cultural level, age and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol were associated with cardiovascular inpatients cognitive dysfunction.
