Ojective: To investigate the status of nurse-patient disputes and nurse professional image in general secondary-level hospitals and tertiary-level hospitals in Sichuan province, and explore the relationship between the disputes and nurse professional image. For the purpose of enhancing nurses' emotional intelligence and stress coping by improving the nurse professional image at all levels hospitals. All these are beneficial to establishing a good relationship between nurses and patients and avoiding disputes as well. Methods: 519 clinical nurses from 4 tertiary-level hospitals and 8 secondary-level hospitals were investigated by using conceptual scale of the professional image of nursing, emotional intelligence scale and simplified coping style questionnaire with the method of stratified cluster sampling. All the data were analyzed with SPSS17.0 statistical software. Results: 1?The status of nurse-patient disputes and the relationship between with nurse professional image:(1) the incidence of nurse-patient disputes in secondary-level hospitals was higher than that in tertiary-level hospitals.(2) Disputes of nurses and patients was positively correlated with the scores of perception levels, expectation levels, total items(P <0.01). 2?The status and influencing factors of nurse professional image:(1) the highest score in the perceptions was the angel of mercy aspect(8.52±0.97), the second was the careerist aspect(7.53±1.32) and the lowest scored dimension was the romantic aspect(5.47±1.42); the highest scores in the expectations was the careerist aspect(8.73±1.17), the second was the angel of mercy aspect(8.38±1.05) and the lowest scored dimension was obedient aspect(4.70±2.03).(2) The nurse's title and monthly income had an influence on the professional image of nurse(P <0.05). 3 ? The status of the nurses' emotional intelligence and the relationship between with nurse professional image:(1) the dimension score order(from high to low) of emotional intelligence scale in general secondary-level hospitals and tertiary-level hospitals as follows: self-mood assessment ? self-mood using ? others' emotion assessment ? self-mood management; the scores of nurses' emotional intelligence in tertiary- level hospitals were higher than that in secondary-level hospitals(P<0.05).(2) The nurses' emotional intelligence was positively correlated with the professional image of nursing(P <0.01). 4?The status of the nurses' emotional intelligence and the relationship between with nurse professional image:(1) the scores of positive coping style were higher than the scores of negative coping style in general secondary-level hospitals and tertiary-level hospitals(P<0.05), the scores of positive coping style were all higher than that of the norm, the scores of negative coping style were all lower than that of the norm.(2) The coping styles was positively correlated with the professional image of nursing(P<0.01). Conclusion: 1?The nurses of general secondary-level hospitals may be more likely to incur disputes and nurses who had good professional image were very unlikely to do that. 2?The professional image of nurses need to be improved. 3?The nurses' emotional intelligence in general secondary-level hospitals needs to be improved further. 4?In secondary-level and tertiary-level hospitals, the positive coping style were higher than the negative coping style, positive coping capacity of the nurses were higher than that of the average person and negative coping capacity of the nurses were lower than that of the average person. Consequently, nursing educators and clinical managers should improve the overall nurse professional image according to the influencing factors for enhancing the emotional intelligence and coping ability of nurses and then applying subtly them to the clinical work. This further increases the care quality and patient satisfaction for the ultimate goal of avoiding nurse-patient disputes and improving the hospital economic benefit and social benefit.
