Low-energy electron beam surface curing, which falls within the scope of the electron irradiation processing, is an energy-saving, highly efficient and environmentally friendly technology, and not only has been widely used overseas in the industries of surface coating, packaging and printing, but has a promising prospect in China.Given its advantages, the prototype of a low-energy electron beam surface curing machine has been developed by our laboratory, it is one type of low-energy electron irradiation accelerator whose high voltage can be continuously adjusted from70 kV to 130 kV, current from 0 mA to 10 mA. This configuration can properly meet the need of the current research about the electron beam surface curing machine and can lay a theoretical and device foundation for the popularization of the energy-saving and high-efficiency electron beam curing technology in China.Traditionally, the high voltage in the electron accelerator could only be manually increased to the needed value by the operator with professional knowledge about accelerator, and the operator at the same time should pay close attention to the change of the status of vacuum in the accelerator in order to make the proper response for the sake of the safe operation of the machine. But now, both the high voltage and beam current in the new accelerator developed by our laboratory can automatically and accurately reach at the value we want by the use of the increment PID close loop control, which makes the operation of the machine more convenient and safer. The control system and human-machine interface of the low-energy electron accelerator for curing are developed by the use of SIEMENS PLCS7-1200 and touch screen KTP 600, and the fail-safe system can function well in response to the change of the condition of the vacuum in the machine. During the commissioning process, the whole control system reaches the design requirement and features stable and reliable performance. What is more, the simplified operation of the control system can further popularize the technology of electron-beam curing.
