Nowadays, with the development of society, people pay more and more attention to their spiritual life. Digital products, cameras, printers, monitors, scanners and other digital colour image equipments have been widely applied to social production and people’s daily life. The mian reason why different colour equipments have different ability of colour reproduction is because they have different colour gamuts. The colour gamut is a complete subset of colours that can be shown directly a given colour space or the colour range of an output device. It is generally believed that the greater the colour gamut is, the better the colour rendering ability is. At the same time, the colour information exchange between different colour output devices increases the diffculty of colour reproduction. Now, we solve difficult problems of corss-media colour reproduction only depend on tristimulus values of colourimetry has been far from people’s requirements. Thus, how to better realize the cross-media colour reproduction is a problem to be solved in the scientific filed. This paper makes a concrete analysis of two kinds of real typical colour gamut which are used into the process of gamut mapping of corss-media colour reproduction workflows, Pointer colour gamut and the reference colour gamut of International Organization for Standardization–ISORCG colour gamut, they are calculated under the CIE illuminant C and CIE illuminant D50,respectively. Compared with the actual data, it is found that both of them can not reflect the real object colour gamut, therefore, a new colour gamut based on the actual samples should be developed.International colour Consortium( abbreviated to ICC from now on) proposed using the ‘Reference Colour Gamut’ to solve the complicated process of cross-media reproduction, the advantage is that we do not need to know the physical information of the source device and all output devices can take data from the ‘Reference Colour Gamut’, so the ‘Reference Colour Gamut’ is required to be as accurate as possible and large enough. The experiment has accumulated more than 85879 reflectance of real surface colours for obtaining a new colour gamut as the better colour gamut, the colour gamut is defined under CIELCh space, CIE illuminant D50 and the 2° observer, there are 696 data points(36 hue by 19 lightness) defining the colour gamut. This colour gamut contains a large number of real world colours which is used as a new ‘Reference Colour Gamut’ that can better reproduce the actual colours.By comparing with two kinds of real object colour gamuts that are most used into the process of gamut mapping, this paper makes a conclusion that the new colour gamut can be better used to evaluate the performance of different colour devices. At the same time, it is more real and accurate than the Pointer and ISORCG colour gamut, this shows that it has good application value. Therefore, it is recommended to use the colour gamut in gamut mapping process in the future.
