| With the development of information technology, the quantity of university library resources exponential increases and resource type becomes complicated. In this background, university libraries in China and abroad all have integrated the heterogeneous resources into a platform based on various systems and search results clustering, in order to provide a unified and faceted search portal for users. It can help users complete retrieval task quickly and effectively. However, in view of the old data source and the rough consolidation process, the effectiveness of faceted search system is questioned. Therefore this article is intended to explore and analyze the effectiveness of faceted search systems of university libraries by means of literature research, network browsing and experience of searching.The paper conducted a full investigation on the faceted search systems and their platforms of library websites of 32 mainstream universities in China and abroad and got basic knowledge of principles, related resource type and the features of facet setting and result records. Then, a retrieval experiment was carried out in 8 platforms which are chosen according to different systems, the most popular search terms are treated as search terms. The paper analysed the focus data collected in the experimental process from 6 facets which are subject, author, discipline, resource type and so on and defined the characteristics of faceted search systems. Base on the analysis,the paper discussed the advantages and disadvantages about effectiveness of faceted search system.Besides, it made comments for improvement in the future. All of these are to increase the effectiveness of faceted search systems and provide users with better service. |
