With the rapid development of semiconductor process in recent years, micro processors have evolved from single core to multi-core which leads to more and more intensive design on unit area and larger scale. As a result, the processors’ power consumption and working temperature boosts drastically. Nowadays, the low power design has become a kernel issue in micro processor design. This article firstly gives descriptions about the development of multi-core processors and the significance of its research. Secondly, it analyzes the components of power consumption and briefly introduces some common tactics of low power design, such as comparing the feats and defeats between different methods. What’s more, it adopts a new structure power switch based on thorough study of various low power design so that it solved the power on/off problem with an optimized power switch algorithm. On the basis of the power switch algorithm, it applies CPF flows to realize the Power Shut-off technology in the coral module’s physical design, and afterwards evaluates the voltage drop, electro migration and power on timing. The experimental data suggests that applying the organized methods of power switch cells together with the optimized techniques can tackle the key issues on power switches and further more can reduce the leakage power and inhibit the Rush current.
