Research On The Evolution Of The Library Functloin Of University Of Science And Technology Of China(1958-2014)

During each period after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the University of Science and Technology of China are remarkably influenced by external factors such as education, academic, politics and culture. It is also an unique university. So its library became a typical example of the evolution of university library’s function after the founding of the People’s Republic of China under the interaction between internal and external factors. This paper has researched the evolution of the library function of the University of Science and Technology of China from 1958 to 2014. It shows the whole process, analysis the factors that has made influence and studies on the internal clue.The first part discusses the library function of USTC at the early stage after the founding of USTC, which is the service for science. USTC was set up in the 1950s, when new science and technology was developing fast and the international competition was fierce. Chinese government made a calling described as "MARCH FOR SCIENCE", which was directly related to the founding of USTC. Its purpose was to develop talent on new science and technology. In this period, the library function was service for the teaching and scientific research. For example, the library bought books on science and technology, made contact with teachers and their offices, meet the demand of teachers and students and so on. There were also limitations because of shortages of materials and experience.The second part discusses the library function of USTC after the southward migration of USTC in the Culture Revolution, which was distorted by politics. During the southward migration there were much destruction in USTC and its library. The library could not operate normally so its function became abnormal.The third part discusses the library function of USTC after the Culture Revolution and the Reform and Open-up, which was the intelligence function. At that time universities were reforming under the calling described as "Science and technology are primary productive force". USTC was in the lead. The demand of intelligence has grown a lot. So the library started to reform to change itself to an intelligence agency and got intelligence function.The fourth part discusses the library function of USTC during the so-called "the Third Venture of USTC", which was academic and service. From the 1990s, USTC got into "211 Project" and started the so-called "the Third Venture of USTC". It has made a plan to became an international top research university. The library also made a plan to became a library of knowledge service. The library construction was related to information technology. Its service was changed from passive to active service. Its service was expanded to the whole society but not only in the university. All these has made academic and service function.The conclusion part summarizes the whole process of the evolution of the library function of USTC. It is a typical example of the evolution of university library’s function after the founding of the People’s Republic of China under the interaction between internal and external factors. Two internal clues has been found. One is the development of the service for teaching and scientific research, the other is growth of subject consciousness and independence of the library.
