The21st century has been widely considered as the information era and the penetration of new science and technology into modern dwellings is unconsciously becoming more and more rapid. There exists more and more network appliances in the domestic environment, such as smart light bulbs, smart refrigerators and smart air conditioners. Meanwhile, with the continuous growth of the economy, the residents are increasingly pursuing the high quality of life. Therefore, the demand that we take full advantage of household appliances, in conjunction with customized software and hardware, to create a smart environment is particularly urgent. In terms of the technology perspective, smart home is a natural extension of current electronic, information and communication technologies. Visions of smart homes have long attracted the attention of researchers in industry and academia and considerable time and energy has been put toward enabling home automation in recent years. Gradually, smart home has become the current trend of the technology development.Although smart home technologies are emerging, they have not been widely adopted because of the difficulties encountered in reality. These barriers are high cost, inflexible manageability, and poor security, respectively. Thus this dissertation designs and implements a middleware architecture solution to overcome them for the smart home system. Firstly, we devise the whole smart home topology elaborately and introduce the related technologies in detail. Secondly, we make an effort to design and develop a secure versatile smart home gateway based on the embedded system as a middleware solution to work out the heterogeneous network. The middleware can create a common platform to exchange information between varieties of network devices. In addition, the smart residential gateway could be deployed to minimize initial investments and in parallel use authentication and authorization mechanism to provide sufficient reliability and security even for the critical applications. Thirdly, we design the overall architecture of the smart home and establish the aggregation system model for the communication between the smart devices and the home gateway. Then we adopt the SOA component programming model based on OSGi framework to develop varieties of bundles and implement the smart LED lighting control system. Finally, we design and realize the user-friendly UI, which can run on mobile devices or within any web browser, based on the Browser/Server architecture to verify and test the availability of the whole created system.The actual results show that the whole designed system possesses good feasibility, high reliability, flexible management and easy integration of various network devices. Moreover, it has low cost, low power consumption and strong stability as well. At the same time, the smart home system can realize automatic monitoring and intelligent control to the digital devices and smart appliances locally or remotely. Furthermore, the access technology could be able to provide sufficient quality of service and guarantee sufficient level of network security in optimal way. In a word, the research of this dissertation has achieved the desired goals.
