Major institution continues to expand capabilities and scale of LAN from now until the foreseeable future. The scale of the network is more and more big, the topological structure is more and more complicated. So, network maintenance workload is several times incremented too. Viruses, equipment failure and user behavior are the most common causes of traffic anomalies. Against the defects of Cacti and other software, this paper elaborates systematically the inevitability of network monitoring, a new visualization method based on WebGIS was proposed.First of all, The author studies the background and research significance of network monitoring, comparing and analyzing the difference between open-source software and commercial software, indicating objects and contents of research. Second, it also offers an analysis of Jining Mobile Corporation LAN, and on this basis, this paper also determines the different demands of administrator user and average user. Each function module is emphatically introduced. It firstly abstracts the network nodes and network cable in real world and determines the corresponding data model of building. Meanwhile, a spatial database which based on PostgreSQL is also established. Finally, Combined with j Query and OpenLayers, a user-friendly software interface have been developed, running a background process in PHP. On the one hand, combined with the WebGIS, network topology could be displayed on the map, on the other hand, the logical network topology is also be able to show a reasonable distribution to users.The simulations show that the average user could get the information about network flow and related data through this system, the administrator user has all of functions including data query and system management. The result also confirmed the effectiveness and practicability of the combination of Cacti and WebGIS. The author hopes that this study will be of some use for future research in this field.
