Upgrading of telecommunications technology in the world is very quick. China, as a big country of telecommunications, the market is now in an important period of change and technological updates. Copper due to its transmission distance and limit the transmission rate, can not meet the huge amount of information transmission services. The access network is called "the last one kilometer information highway", plays a very important role in the whole network. Passive Optical Network (PON) is a new problem to solve last-mile fiber access network technology to passive optical network-based technology.Fiber access (FTTx) technology has the interface type, high stability, high bandwidth and strong carrying capacity of multi-service properties, so it is widely used to provide customers with high quality service. During my working time in the Telecom company, I took part in many implementation of EPON project, such as the FTTB+ADSL project, the FTTB+LAN access and the most commonly used FTTH building mode. The application experience of EPON is obtained through the practical work of residential coverage and dedicated line access for government and enterprise.This paper first introduces the basic concept of EPON, including basic principle, transmission principle, and then introduces EPON protocol stack, key technology, topology structure, etc.Then the EPON technology and other common access technology characteristics and differences are introduced.The article focuses on the application of some common scenario analysis and the analysis for different solutions and investment, according to different customer scenarios on the emphasis of the communications business, on the application of EPON network under different scenarios of the requirements and the characteristics of the network.Finally, the development direction of EPON-10G EPON is introduced briefly. The 1OG EPON access network will be the next hot technology application and development because of market demand and the characteristic of 10 g EPON with large bandwidth, large ratio and based on compatible upgrade.
