With the rapid development of computer science and technology, the demand for campus network application has also increased. With the mushrooming of network nodes, the structure of campus network has become more complicated, which requires better equipment performance and quicker link speed. To establish a complicated campus network system based on multiservice, effective means for the planning, designing and implement of campus network is needed. The method of mathematical modeling is too complicated, while the method of design according to past experience is not reliable, which can’t meet the demand of growing network requirements. Therefore, modeling and simulation with network simulation software has become the inevitable choice. This thesis takes the network topology of a campus network as example, discusses the operating principle and physical features of network topology, common network equipment, network transmission medium and network technology, etc. in common campus network. On the basic of discussing, summarizing and analyzing the above content, this thesis simulates common network behavior in campus network based on modeling its network structure by OPNET simulation software, then collects and analyzes key parameters. Meanwhile, it resets parameters influencing network performance by adding network nodes and changing link bandwidth on the basic of original model, then conducts a second modeling and simulation analysis, thus obtains the effects of network performance parameters to original network. Finally, it obtains the feasibility of improving design scheme on the basic of the improved campus network topology model. This thesis can provide objective and reliable quantitative foundation for the planning and designing of campus network, enhance the scientific character of network designing, shorten the construction cycle of network and reduce the risk of campus network investment, so it has certain engineering value. Finally, the author summarizes the thesis and makes some expectation for future work.
