The space of physical activity plays an important role in exciting and guiding the middle school students’ enthusiasm for sports activities, in improving the quality of life and forming a healthy lifestyle. Based on the view of urban development,this study made a qualitative and quantitative evaluation to the spatial characteristics and layout of sports activities of middle school student in Jingan District of Shanghai by using the urban geography, sports and other related theories, reveled the basic characteristics of the middle school students’ physical activity space in Jingan District, Shanghai and put forward some feasible suggestions finally. Therefore, this research will provide theoretical and practical basis for making "13th Five-Year" sports facilities construction planning of Shanghai scientifically, increasing the utilized efficiency of sports field and building a sound public health service system.This study found the following spatial characteristics of sports activities of middle school students in Jingan District of Shanghai:①The main places, as for extracurricular sports activities of middle school students, have great randomness, the highest utilization rate is the open place. physical activities of middle school students mainly occur in the scope of community or residential quarters, showing a clear principle of "the nearest exercise" and 4 layer structure of behavior space;②The number of senior school students who do not take part in extracurricular physical activities occupied 25%,compared with 9% of junior school student. The main time of middle school students to participate in extracurricular physical activities is from 1 pm to 5 pm and lasts nearly 5-20 minutes for most students;③Students’ personal attributes, family attributes and students’ perception to space of physical activities are the major factors that influenced the sports behavior of middle school students in Jingan District, Shanghai. Therefore, the school can use some small spaces and put some less dangerous equipments to exercise in time for students. Also, Parents need to be concerned about the growth of students and give strong support to the physical activities what their children interested. Furthermore, it is responsible for the government of Shanghai to construct a integrated sports places of home-school-community, make full use of the existing site resources and improve service awareness in order to let middle school students have the sense to exercise.This study found the following characteristics of physical space layout of middle school students in Jingan District, Shanghai:①Whether the spatial structure of urban sports activities is reasonable or not affects the enthusiasm of middle school students to participate in sports activities. Planning and constructing urban sports space that can guide and inspire middle school students to do activities is the important aspect of current sports service in cities and the national Fitness Program;②Fairness and efficiency are the total principles of the specific arrangement of physical activity space at all levels. We should build the correct mode of urban physical activity space according to the accessibility of the space of sports activities at all levels, the regional population density and the long-term development goal of cities;③The overall service of physical activity space is relative low in middle school students in Jingan District, Shanghai. Though the physical activity space of residential district is comparative perfect, the township lacks physical activity space seriously, reflecting the common structure of "core and edge" about physical activity space at all levels;④The regularity of middle school students to participate in the physical activities is related to the spatial level of sports, that means the lower the level, the stronger the randomness. The diversification of sports activities and the restriction of leisure time are the main factors that affect the choice of the physical activities for middle school students. Family attributes of middle school students influence the choice of places to exercise. Meanwhile, the space is the most important factor that restricts the middle school students’ physical activities;⑤The various function of urban space is determined by its finiteness, we should take the special and non-specialized urban sports space synchronization as the main strategy and format special planning owning to the congestion of urban space. Consequently, All sectors of society should make some efforts: implementing the planning to speedup the construction of sports venues in every district, constructing sports venues that people enjoy to meet different people’s need, strengthening cooperation to promote the cross sectoral integration of the construction of sports venues, creating ways to ensure the funding needs of sports venues, enhancing management to promote the sports venues service actively, Improving the quality to increase the utilization of sports venues effectively.
