The development of science and technology has driven forward the development ofmedia. The mobile phone as media is popular with the public thanks to its portability andpowerful functions. It is widely used by university students as an important tool forinterpersonal communication and access to information. It is also an important carrier ofideological and political education for workers of ideological and political education. Butowing to factors related to students themselves, schools and the society, the mobile phoneas media has brought about opportunities and challenges for the ideological and politicaleducation of university students. This paper makes a comprehensive and meticulousanalysis of the opportunities and challenges brought by the mobile phone as media onuniversity students’ ideological and political education and comes up with feasiblecountermeasures.Based on a survey conducted in four Jiangxi universities and qualitative research, thepaper deeply explores the operational laws of the mobile phone as media in collegestudents’ ideological and political education. The paper consists of the following fivechapters:The initial chapter of the thesis expounds the research background, significance,research methodology, and innovative points of this paper. It defines such relevant terms as“the mobile phone as media” and “media literacy” and reviews the status quo of theresearch on university students’ideological and political education.The second chapter looks into the opportunities the mobile phone as media hasbrought to university ideological and political education. The opportunities include the useof the mobile phone enriching the contents of university students’ ideological and politicaleducation, expanding space and time of university students’ ideological and politicaleducation, innovating the methods of conducting university ideological and politicaleducation and improving the efficiency of university ideological and political education.The third chapter analyses challenges the mobile phone as media has brought touniversity ideological and political education. The challenges include bad informationtransmitted over the mobile phone distorting the values of university students, universitystudents’ excessive reliance on the mobile phone, students’ abnormal views of mobilephone consumption, increasing the difficulty of conducting ideological and politicaleducation and improper use of the mobile phone creating obstacles for schoolmanagement.The fourth probes into the paths through which to give a full play to the mobilephone as media in the university ideological and political education. The author points outthat the joint effort of the school, university students’ ideological and political educators, relevant sectors and government agencies and individual students is the guarantee of thebenign development of the mobile phone as media in ideological and political education.The fifth chapter summarizes the whole paper and points out the limits of this studyand the direction of future research as well.
