This thesis offers an innovative approach to European and Chinese involvement in security and development on the African continent by analyzing the role of the European Union and the People’s Republic of China in resolving past and current as well as preventing further conflicts between Sudan and South Sudan, along with their involvement in the post-conflict development of both countries.By reviewing the foundations of European and Chinese respective security and development policy and strategies in the Sudans, this thesis highlights the convergence, divergence and complementarities of both actors’approaches. In doing so, it underscores the reasons of potential competition between the E.U. and the P.R.C. while unveiling areas of prospective cooperation amidst them.Through such an analysis, this thesis offers new perspectives on the promise and potential positive outcomes of a comprehensive partnership between the E.U. and the P.R.C. on security and development issues in the Sudans-and Africa more generally.
