The Europe’s Renaissance brought great changes of the art in 19 th century and a variety of artistic thought was followed. Among the many art genre, the post-impressionist was unique. They have achieved a breakthrough in many respects, and opened the prelude to modern painting. It was an important turning point in the history of Western art, and post-impressionist abandoned the traditional painting style. In art they advocated to play the artist’s subjective feelings, and their paintings were not simple imitation of nature. Post-Impressionist painters were from holistic approach, and focused on the integrated use of elements. They think the Impressionist was too much stick to light and color, and ignored the color effect on the expression of personal feelings. They started from the lack of the Impressionist, think and explored boldly, and opened their own art practice trip.Besides, they also opposed the complex performance methods of light and color of the Neo-Impressionist. They think that the most important thing of painting is to express personal feelings, and the Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist abandoned the most important factor. Post-Impressionist painter’s work was full of strong personality and personal subjective imagination. Their paintings had great aesthetic value, and broken the traditional religious art and portrait art. They increased appreciation for painting. Color became a mean for artists to express inner feelings and explore formal beauty.Post-Impressionist pointed out the way forward for later painters in terms of color research, which was a turning point in the history of painting. In art, the early post-impressionist painter’s style was been influenced by Impressionism in a certain extent. But in the long-term exploration, they found deficiencies of Impressionism, and conducted a new exploration of connotation of art.In art, they focused on subjective feelings of the life and nature,changed purposefully in visual form, and formed their own unique new visual style. Color theory of post-impressionist had become the cornerstone of modern art color, and the color characteristics of post-impressionist were strengthened. The post-impressionist art affected not only the art of Germany and France, but also the world. It also has a great impact for the later traditional art.Post-Impressionist art is not only the cut-off of traditional art, but also the source of modern art, so it has great significance.Post-Impressionist brought a color revolution. Post-Impressionist paid a heavy price on the road to discovery color, but this revolution eventually succeeded to get world recognition. Until the 19 th century, science has been further developed, resulting in some light and color theory, Artists have a new understanding of color, which resulted in expression and ideas for color. Post-impressionist pay attention to the authenticity of the natural, but was focused on the objective of the color change in the images of the performance,just as we call "condition color" today. At the same time they relaxed body shaping and three-dimensional shape, which like a modern painting called "sculptural". Thus the performance core of the created images was color.These are precisely the purely visual experience that the modern art theorists believed. Therefore, these have great significance on research of post-impressionist colors.Post-Impressionist painters explored the spirit of color in their lifetime, and they brought a epochal change of color. Through the discussion of painter color and creative practice among the Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, and Post-Impressionist, the paper overall analyzed their similarities, differences and the impact on modern painting, which can help us to use color more better in art practice.
