The report is based on the author’s experience as a translator at the UN Chinese translation service at Geneva from July 1st to August 31 st. During this internship, the author is mainly responsible for translating the meeting documents of the International Law Commission. In addition, the assignment of the author also included the establishment of translation memory(TM) and the standardization of the legal terminologies.The report first gave a brief description of the UN multilingual service with a view to providing the readers with a preliminary knowledge of the characteristic of the UN multilingual service and its working mode. Then the specific task of the author is described with the emphasis on various difficulties and challenges that the author had met on the job and the solutions to them. The report elaborates on the translation strategy and explores the principles and techniques of translating complex and long legal text, which greatly improved the author’s translation skills and developed the bilingual capacities. Additionally, because of many similarities between interpreting and translating, the frequently used translation methods will also contribute to the improvement of the interpreting abilities of the author.Finally, the author also hopes this report can shed some light on the cultivation of the international language professionals, the MTI translation and interpreting teaching in most colleges and offer some useful information for students who aspire to apply for the translation internship in the United Nations.
