Objective: We performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the difference of efficacy and safety between cryoballon ablation and irrigated radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Methods: Indentify the clinical studies comparing cryoballoon ablation and radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, then respectively extract the research date of pulmonary vein isolated rate, postoperative atrial fibrillation recurrence rate as the effective index dates and procedure time, radiofrequency fluoroscopic time, major complications rate, total complications rate as the safety index dates. The meta-analysis is performed with REVMAN5.3 software. Results: In the first generation cryoballon ablation group compared with radiofrequency ablation group. It included 17 studies, the first generation cryoballon ablation group included 1619 patients and the irrigated radiofrequency ablation group included 4001 patients. The results of Meta-analysis as follow: in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, the first generation cryoballon ablation had a shorter mean procedure time(WMD=-25.70,95%CI:[-45.30,-6.15],P=0.01),a lower pericardial effusion rate(OR=0.60,95%CI:[0.38,0.94],P=0.03),a higher phrenic nerve palsy rate(OR=14.01,95%CI:[5.50,35.73],P<0.00001) than the irrigated radiofrequency abalation.there was no statistically significant in the other effective index dates and safety index dates. In the second generation cryoballon ablation group compared with radiofrequency ablation group. It included 5 studies, the second generation cryoballon ablation group included 1117 patients and the irrigated radiofrequency ablation group included 932 patients. The results of Meta-analysis as follow: in the treatment of atrial fibrillation, the second generation cryoballon ablation had a higher pulmonary vein isolation success rate(OR=2.54,95%CI:[1.31,4.89],P=0.005),a higher phrenic nerve palsy rate(OR=7.36,95%CI:[2.55,21.22],P=0.0002),a lower pericardial effusion rate(OR=0.35,95%CI:[0.13,0.97],P=0.04)than the irrigated radiofrequency abalation.there was no statistically significant in the other effective index dates and safety index dates. Conclusions: cryoballon ablation was as effective and safe for the treatment of atrial fibrillation, irrigated radiofrequency ablation. cryoballon ablation is an effective and safe operation way of the ablation of atrial fibrillation.
