| ObjectiveIn this research, we used ontological knowledge base and modern theory and method of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) to study ancient and modern literatures on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment of chronic renal failure. We aimed to explore the prescription rules and characteristics which conforming the practical clinical needs. Besides, we followed the internationally recognized standard (Cochrane method) to seek a credible evidence of TCM treatment of chronic renal failure. And we hoped our results might be a reference for new drug research in the future.MethodsAfter founding an ontological knowledge base of ancient literature of chronic renal failure, we used computer technology to dig out the similar prescriptions and further studied its rules and characteristics. In the mean time, systematic reviews of TCM treatment of chronic renal failure were retrieved thoroughly. We made an "overview of reviews" according to the requirements on Cochrane Handbook 5.1.0. Those high quality systematic reviews which met the selection criteria were summarized to gain a reliable evidence for TCM treatment of chronic renal failure. Finally, we analyzed and compared the study results in ancient and modern literatures, in order to approach a proper advice of TCM treatment with chronic renal failure, and offer a references opinion to clinical practice.ResultsTotally 81 articles were retrieved. According to inclusion and exclusion criteria,3 papers were included in the final analysis, overview of reviews. In the meantime, we dug out 4 core prescriptions from ancient TCM literatures, and found out some rules of medicine seletion and prescriptions.ConclusionIt has been proved that Astragalus mongholicus, Rheum officinale and Corduceps sinensis were curative to chronic renal failure in modern researches. However, the validity of TCM is still lack of reliable evidences. In our study of ancient TCM literature, we found 4 core prescritions represent of 4 different TCM treatment methods, such as nourish Yin, warming Yang, resolving turbidity and replenishing the spleen. We discuss from there four angles of curing chronic renal failure, hoping to give reference for clinical practice. |
