ObjectiveObesity, HIV, drugs and alcohol are recognized as the world’s four hardest medical social problem. China has the most obesity patients in the world. Obesity is a systemic endocrine and metabolic disease. The pathogenesis of obesity is very complicated. Obesity is often associated with other disease, such as cardiovascular disease and cerebrovascular disease, thus it brings a heavy burden to the body. Western medicine treatment of simple obesity has diet, exercise therapy, drug and surgical treatment. Drugs and surgery treatment have problems of side effects and prognosis. The treatment of simple obesity is always a difficult problem in clinical and research work. Now many of the medical staff use many methods of traditional Chinese medicine therapy as acupuncture, massage, ear-point therapy to treat obesity, and they all have obvious curative effect. Acupuncture can stimulate the body’s own regulating mechanism, to improve the endocrine and metabolism. Acupuncture is a green, safety and relatively ideal way to lose weight. This study was to observe the clinical research on using acupuncture of Tongyuan theory for treating simple obesity of spleen deficiency and dampness obstruction, and to explore the mechanism for the treatment of simple obesity with Tongyuan theory. The study hopes to explore a more effective, simpler and suitable way for treating obesity patients, and alleviate the pain of the patients.MethodsThis study selected sixty patients which are accordance with the inclusion criteria, and randomly assigned them to the treatment group and the control group. The treatment group was used Tongyuan theory to acupuncture, and patients in the control group were treated by conventional acupuncture.A course of treatment included eight times and continued four weeks. Every time before and after treatment, we observed patients’clinical symptoms, measured their weight, waist circumference and hip circumference. After the course, we conducted a follow-up survey after four weeks. At the end of the clinical research, we evaluated the patients’physical indexes such as weight, height, waist circumference and hip circumference, and calculated BMI and waist-to-hip ratio. It was worth noting that we focused on the changes of TCM syndrome detailed. In the end, we took SPSS 20.0 software for statistical analysis of data.ResultsThe Tongyuan acupuncture group and the conventional acupuncture group both had thirty patients, and cases did not loss during the course. The difference of gender, age and course of the disease between the treatment group and the control group had no statistical significance(P>0.05), it meant two data of different groups were semblable. Before the treatment, the treatment group and the control group had no statistical significance in weight(P>0.05), it meant two data of different groups were semblable in weight. We used paired t-test to compare the weight before and after treatment. As a result, the scores had significant change before and after treatment in spite of the treatment group and the control group(P<0.05). But the weight of the treatment group changed not significant than that of the control group. It prompted that two groups had not distinction in reducing the weight. After the treatment, the weights of two groups were still declining, but no significant distinction between two groups in long-term curative effect by follow-up investigate. Before the treatment, the treatment group and the control group had no statistical significance in BMI (P>0.05), it meant two data of different groups were semblable in BMI. We used paired t-test to compare the BMI before and after treatment. As a result, the scores had significant change before and after treatment in spite of the treatment group and the control group(P<0.05). But the score of the treatment group changed not significant than that of the control group. It prompted that two groups had not distinction in improving the BMI. After the treatment, the BMI of two groups were still declining, but no significant distinction between two groups in long-term curative effect by follow-up investigate. Before the treatment, the treatment group and the control group had no statistical significance in waist circumference and hip circumference (P>0.05), it meant two data of different groups were semblable in waist-t-o-hip ratio. We used t-test to compare the waist-to-hip ratio before and after treatment. As a result, the scores had significant change before and after treatment in spite of the treatment group and the control group(P< 0.05).It prompted that two groups had statistical significance in change-ng the waist-to-hip ratio, and the treatment group was better in improving the waist-to-hip ratio. Before the treatment, the treatment group and the control group had no statistical significance in the TCM syndrome integral (P>0.05), it meant two data of different groups were semblable in the TCM syndrome integral. We used paired t-test to compare the TCM syndrome integral before and after treatment. As a result, the scores had significant change before and after treatment in spite of the treatment group and the control group(P<0.05).It prompted that two groups had statistical significance in changing the TCM syndrome integral, and the treatment group was better in improving the TCM syndrome.According to curative effect evaluation standard, after the treatment, fourteen patients were clinical recovery, seven patients had markedly effect, eight patients had effect and one patient had no effect, the healing rate is 96.67%in the treatment group; In the control group, ten patients were clinical recovery, nine patients were markedly effective, seven patients had effect and four cases were ineffective, the healing rate was 86.67%. Compared the curative effect of two groups by Ridit analysis, there was no statistically significant difference in two groups. It meant that the curative effect of the Tongyuan acupuncture group and the conventional acupuncture group were no significant difference, but the markedly effective rate and the healing rate of treatment group were more outstanding than that of the control group.ConlusionAcupuncture of Tongyuan theory can significantly reduce weight、BMI、 waist-to-hip ratio and the TCM syndrome integral, alleviate simple obesity of spleen deficiency and dampness obstruction. The treatment group has better effect in improving TCM syndrome and reducing waist-to-hip ratio than the control group. Although two ways to cure simple obesity have not significant difference statistically in curative effect, the healing rate of treatment group is more outstanding than that of the control group. This study demonstrates that Tongyuan theory has curative effect in treating simple obesity of spleen deficiency and dampness obstruction.
