Objective:Research the correlation between spleen volumes CT measured by Workstation software and liver Computer-Aided Segmentation Software in the aim to make the diagnosis of splenomegaly. Methods:2 pigs were first experimented to test the accuracy of the two methods of spleen volume measurement; both two pigs underwent CT scan plus WS and the experimental organs volume measurement; only one pig benefited CAS organs volume measurement. The repeatability of spleen volumes measurement were performed by two researchers at different times in 5 patients to test the reliability of the two methods.42 normal (men 29,women 13) & 28 liver cirrhosis (men 18,women 10) patients referred to abdominal CT for various reasons were randomly selected, age range 20-86 years from January to July 2010. Only patients with CT plain scan plus three enhancement phases protocol (hepatic arterial, portal venous and delayed phase) images were included, and spleen volumes were measured by 64-slices CT workstation hand drawing software and by liver automatically segmentation computed software. Results:The pigs test experiment provided that organs volumes measured in one of the pigs by CAS and water tank were closed to each other. The repeatability of WS method by two students in 5 cases showed a small difference but no difference in CAS. The average spleen volume of 42 normal cases for (WS & CAS) was respectively:162 ± 62.26 cm3 and 159.10±73.46 cm3.The average spleen volume of 28 liver cirrhosis patients:WS 478.97±272.50 cm3,CAS 492.93±349.73 cm3; age mean 53.37±14.84 years. The correlation coefficient of spleen volume measured by two different methods was r=0.80, p>0.01;Student’s t test indicated the difference between the means in two methods of measurement, statistically significance, p<0.05 (one-tailed). Conclusion:There is a good relevance between WS and CAS spleen volume; therefore WS and CAS can substitute each for other in spleen volume measurement for accurate estimation and splenomegaly diagnosis assessment.
