A Comparison Of Esthetic Effect After Palatally Impacted Canines Treated By Open-eruption And Closed-eruption Technique

Objective To compare the esthetic judgement of palatally impacted canines treated by closed technique eruption versus open technique eruption.Methods 28 patients with unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canines were divided randomly into 2 groups, group 1 was treated by closed technique(n=14) and the other by open technique(n=14).The PES(Pink Esthetic Scores)of the impacted canines were measured 3 months after removal of the fixed appliance.40 people in nondental occupations were chosed to judge the esthetic of impacted canines.Results There were no significant differences on the PES of impacted canines treated by closed technique or open closed technique.There were significant differences on the scores of curvature of the facial mucosa and level of the facial mucosa between 2 groups,but there were no significant differences on mesial papilla、distal papilla、 root convexity/soft tissue color and texture.And there were also no significant differences of the esthetic judgement between 2 goups by the questionnaire survey.Comclusions There were no differences between the closed and open groups in terms of PES judgment,but the esthetic of palatally impacted canines treated by closed technique was better than those treated by open technique at curvature of the facial mucosa and level of the facial mucosa.
