Objectives To survey the status of illness perception and treatment adherence in MHD patients, and analyze their influencing factors; To explore the relation between illness perception and treatment adherence, so effective interventions can be designed by health care providers to promote their status. Methods 194 hemodialysis patients in three tertiary hospitals of Hefei participated in the study. All Patients were investigated with demographic and disease related information questionnaire, the revised Illness Perception Questionnair (IPQ-R) and treatment adherence scale, data were analyzed by SPSS 13.0. The reliability and validity of IPQ-R in MHD patients were tested first; then analyze the status and influencing factors of illness perception and treatment adherence, at the same time explore the relation between them. Results Seven factors were extracted through factor analysis, which could explained 61.651% of the total variance. Result of explore factor analysis showed that the item loads of 18,19 in all seven dimensions were less than 0.40 (P<0.05). After delete items of 18,19, the second part of IPQ-R retained 36 items. The Cronbach’s coefficients of the 7 dimensions ranged from 0.763~0.904. The average score of Identity was (5.64±3.19). The score of each dimension of P ranged from 2.92 to 4.18, dimension of Timeline (acute/chronic) got the highest score and timeline cyclical got the lowest score. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that age, gender, marital status, and comorbidity were the influencing factors of IP. The score of treatment adherence was (85.02±12.04). The average score of dialysis regimen adherence dimension got the highest score (4.91±0.16), and dietary adherence got the lowest score (2.92±0.74). some dimensions of IP are correlated with treatment adherence (P<0.05). Treatment adherence is predicted by personal control, treatment control, gender and age. Conclusion The IPQ-R is reliable and valid, and can be used in Chinese maintenance hemodialysis patients. Patients with MHD have negative IP. Healthcare professionals should focus on the IP of MHD patients, and then take measures according to the influencing factors to improve their status. The treatment adherence of MHD patients was at a middle to high level. Medical professionals should pay attention to the predictors of personal control, treatment control, gender and age, effective interventions can be designed to improve the treatment adherence of MHD patients, and improve their health outcomes finally.
