ObjectiveThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the status quo of the career planning in four medical colleges and universities in Henan province and to further analyze its influencing factors. In view of the influencing factors, it also discusses how to strengthen as well as improve career planning education and to stabilize nursing specialty thought and enhance sense of identity as nursing career.MethodBased on the literature analysis, a survey was conducted among 215 male nursing majors from medicine college of Pingdingshan University, medicine college of Xuchang University, Medical College of Luohe and Xinyang Vocational Technology College by means of questionnaire of general affairs, questionnaire influencing factors of career planning and questionnaire of status quo of career planning. Data were processed by using SPSS 17.0 software. Single-factor analysis approach was adopted to compare the distribution of career planning situation in different factors and multiple-linear regression analysis approach was adopted to analyze the influencing factors of career planning situation.Results 1.Male nursing majors career planning scores 104.26±13.44, which is at the medium level of satisfaction. The good performance of career planning accounts for 19.32%, the average performance accounts for 70.53% and the bad performance accounts for 10.14%. Each item scores ranging from 3.17 to 3.87, in sequence of professional orientation,professional recognition, career confidence,self-awareness, self-awareness and career planning.2. The analysis result of single factor analysis of questionnaire of status quo of career planning of male nursing majors in college and university shows that 10 factors are statistically meaningful (P<0.05), which are College Entrance Examination selection status, family origin status, occupational status of father, occupational status of mother, career planning study status, career guidance origin status, presence or absence of career planning status, professional satisfaction situation, status of willingness to take up nursing after graduation and working treatment.3. The analysis result of multiple-linear regression analysis of questionnaire of status quo of career planning of male nursing majors in college and university shows that family origin status, career guidance origin status, working treatment, family factor and school factor enter into career planning total regression equation; specialty choice, occupational status of father, taking up nursing after graduation and family factor enter into self-cognition regression equation; family origin status, occupational status of mother and family factor enter into specialty cognition regression equation; family origin status, career guidance origin status and family factor enter into career orientation regression equation; career guidance origin status, working treatment and school factor enter into career confidence regression equation; career guidance origin status, family factor and school factor enter into self-planning regression equation.ConclusionsThe status quo of career planning of male nursing majors is at modest satisfaction, self-planning ability is insufficient and willingness to take up long-term nursing work is not strong. The factors which influence male nursing majors’ career planning are family origin, mother’s occupation, career guidance origin, professional satisfaction, willingness to take up nursing after graduation, willingness to engage in nursing with good paid, personal factor, family factor, school factor and occupational factor. University nursing educators should lay emphasis on counseling of male college major students’ career planning, and improve their major satisfaction and professional identity. Nursing administrators should pay attention to and give support to these male college students in nursing majors, and give full play to their strengths, and provide developing space and opportunities for the sustainable development of the profession of nursing.
