Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of the Fonseca anamnestic index(FAI) in the identification of temporomandibular disorder(TMD). Methods: 18-25 year old eight hundred and ninety-seven college students of Xinjiang Medical University were participated in this study. The Clinical examination method of temporomandibular joint for Temporomandibular Disorders were first applied as the gold standard for the diagnosis. The investigation objects were investigated by the clinical examination of temporomandibular joint and the Fonseca anamnestic index respectively,to determine the accuracy of FAI for TMD. Results:(1)Incidence of Xinjiang medical university students TMD diagnosis by clinical examination method of temporomandibular joint was 39.91%, 41.48% in Han and 39.70% in minority college students, 32.77% in male and 47.98% in female.(2) Incidence of college medical students TMD diagnosis by Fonseca anamnestic index was 43.59%, 43.29% in Han and 43.97% in minority college students, 36.13% in male and 52.02% in female.(3) The receiver operating characteristic(ROC) was used to determine the accuracy of the diagnosis(area under the curve) and the best cut off point of the tool. Thus, Fonseca anamnestic index demonstrated a moderate degree of accuracy for the diagnosis of TMD(area under the ROC curve of 0.771), the sensitivity is 94.97%, the specificity is 90.54%, the positive and negative predictive values is 86.96% and 96.44% respectively, positive and negative likelihood ratios is 10.04 and 0.056 respectively.(4)TMJ dysfunction based on the Fonseca anamnestic index almost half of participants(56.41%) were classified as having no dysfunction, whereas only 1.67% was classified as having severe dysfunction. 35.34% classified as having light dysfunction, 6.58% classified as having moderate severe dysfunction. Conclusion:(1) The moderate degree of diagnostic accuracy demonstrates that the Fonseca anamnestic index can be employed for the identification of TMD in clinical and epidemiological studies.(2)The temporomandibular disorder was one of the most common diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region, its prevalence is higher among Xinjiang medical university students.(3)The occurrence of temporomandibular disorders is more common in women than in men.(4)Temporomandibular disorders had no obvious difference between nations prevalence rate.
