Purpose:In order to put forward the new train of thoughts on the development of medical informatics in China, medical informatics research at home and abroad is compared by Scientomerics.Research subjects:Medical informatics as the research object is selected.Data:1. The foreign medical informatics research data sources According to 2013 JCR, all the data with format ‘article’ from 24 medical informaticsjournals in the Web of ScienceTM core collection database in addition to China(including Taiwan) in the last three decades are collected.2. The domestic medical informatics research data sources Chinese data: the periodical literatures related to the theme of "medicine" and "intelligence" or the "medicine" and "information" from "CNKI", "Wan fang medical database" and "VIP site" for the period 1984-2014 are retrieved. English data: According to 2013 JCR, all the data with format ‘article’ from 24 medical informatics journals in the Web of ScienceTM core collection database including China(Taiwan) from 1984 to 2014 are collected.Methods:1. Literature analysis2. Scientomerics: Citation analysis, Journals citation analysis, Co-word analysis and Co-citation analysis3. Mapping knowledge domain4. Statistical methods: Correlate analysis, Hierarchical clustering5. Comparative analysis6. Programming language: JavaResults:1. The foreign is superior to domestic in research production, the ability of absorbing achievements of others and the speed of update. The foreign is superior to domestic in both quantity and quality of the core group. The update speed of the foreign medical information literature is faster.2. The main parent disciplines of foreign medical informatics are medicine, engineering technology,mathematics and biology, while they are medical, social sciences and the information technology in domestic.The related disciplines of foreign medical informatics have more quantity and variety than domestic. Potential branches of foreign medical informatics have in common with domestic in the bioinformatics, nursing informatics, clinical informatics and public health informatics.The development of foreign pharmaceutical informatics is rapid while the development of domestic traditional medical informatics is rapid.3. The development of the domestic medical informatics is later than foreign, but the development speed is very fast. Intelligent electronic medical, data mining, machine learning and knowledge map is a common trend of the development of medical informatics at home and abroad.Conclusions:1. Foreign medical informatics research achievement is much higher than domestic medical informatics research achievement, the scientific quality of our country isneeded to improve.2. The domestic and foreign medical informatics discipline structure exist similarities and differences. Based on seeking common ground while putting aside differences, our country should learn from foreign discipline structure characteristics to improve the teaching structure of medical informatics.3. Although medical informatics has experienced different development process at home and abroad, the development trend is similar, it shows that the discipline of medical informatics in China started late, but the development speed is fast, the starting point is high, and it is accurate to grasp the international frontier.Innovation points:1. By using the methods of scientometrics, the discipline structure of medical informatics is systematically studied from three aspects in domestic and foreign.2. By using the method of co-word analysis based on title, abstract or the full text, the potential branches of medical informatics at home and abroad are discussed.Conceptions for making further study:The discipline structure of medical informatics is only qualitatively compared because of the unified standard of medical informatics at home and abroad. To solve the above problems, It is expected to compare more scientific medical informatics discipline structure between domestic and foreign in a unified subject classification system.
