Objective: To investigate the causes and outcome of fever of unknown origin(FUO) and to summarize its clinical features, occurrence regularity so as to provide useful reference for its clinical diagnosis. Methods: A retrospective study of 80 patients’ pathogenic diagnosis of the FUO from pneumology department was made to analyze the relationship between the cause and sex, age, course of fever, diagnosis time. Results: 1.There were 70 definitely diagnosed patients among 80 FUO ones, accounting for 87.5% and 10 undiagnosed patients, accounting for 12.5%. 5 patients(6.3%) died from infectious diseases. The causes of the 70 definitely diagnosed patients were listed as follows:(1) infectious diseases led to 49 patients(61.3%). Tuberculosis ranked top for among the 49 patients 17(21.3%) suffered from tuberculosis, 15(18.8%) had TB and 2(2.5%) had extrapulmonary tuberculosis; Stroke-associated pneumonia came next, 11(13.8%) were with it; 5 cases(6.3%) suffered from brucellosis;(2) 14 patients(17.5%) had rheumatological disease among whom 5(6.3%) were with adult Still’s disease(3) neoplastic disease in 3 patients(3.8%) who had lymphoma, colon cancer, lung cancer respectively;(4) other causes of four cases(5.0%). 2. Has obvious between different disease types and gender difference was statistically significant(2? =8.316,P<0.05). 3. Different kinds of disease in different age the distribution of no statistical significance(2? =3.389,P>0.05).4. Different disease types on the heating time has significant difference was statistically significant(2? =30.898,P<0.05).5. Different kinds of disease diagnosis time differences statistically(2? =24.662,P<0.05). 6. In patients with FUO, Yin deficiency type(22/80, 27.5%), table hot type(14/80, 17.5%) and autumn dry type accounted for 12.5%(10/80) is higher than other type of syndrome. Conclusion: Infection and connective tissue disease is a major disease of FUO, and TB is still the first reason of infectious diseases causing FUO. And it can not be ignored in clinical. At the same time we must pay attention to some special infectious endemic disease, for animal husbandry in Xinjiang province, the economic, environmental, health, medical level is poorer, associated with brucellosis and AIDS cannot be ignored. The tend in clinical diagnosis such as tumor, little delay to FUO. In view of the clinical diagnosis of FUO, we should consider the difference of the different disease types and gender, age, heat process and the diagnosis time. It has the certain guide significance to the clinical diagnosis. Thus we consider that the FUO is due to the atypical manifestation of common disease, we should follow the "individualized therapeutic principles", carry on the detailed and comprehensive medical history data collection and analysis. And most FUO cases could be diagnosised..
