Objective: To explore the effects of positive psychological intervention for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients with anxiety disorders basing on broaden and build theory of gratitude. Methods: The current study was conducted in 2 tertiary hospitals in Nanchong city, Sichuan province. intervention was carried out in one hospital and the other served as the control. patients who were admitted for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated with anxiety were eligible for this study. A total of 182 patients were included, with 91 patients in intervention group and 91 in control group. Patients in the control group recieved the general health education and health behavior guidance related to the implementation of COPD disease, and the additional positive psychological intervention basing on broaden and build theory was given to the patients of the intervention group. Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS), Airways Questionnaire 20(AQ20) and General well-being scale(GWB) were used to evaluate the intervention effects on the time points of 0, 3 and 6 month after intervention respectively.Results:1.There was no significant difference in demographic characteristic between intervention group and control group(p>0.05), indicating the comparability of two groups.2.The scores of SAS, AQ20, GWB and 6 subscales were no significant differences before intervention between the two groups(p>0.05), demonstrating there was no deviation in the baseline of general information of patients between two groups.3. In gross evaluation between two groups, the scores of SAS, AQ20 were much lower and the scores of GWB and 6 subscales were extensive higher in the intervention group than those of in the control group, and all of the differences were significant(p<0.01). Following the intervention extending, the scores of SAS, AQ20 went to lower and lower and the scores of GWB and 6 subscales increased progressively in the intervention group, all the differences showed significant(p<0.01). But this time dependent manner was not found in the control group, there was no difference of ether SAS, AQ20, GWB or 6 subscales between 3 and 6 month after intervention. There were interaction between intervention and time(p<0.01), demonstrating there was significant difference of change trending between the two groups.4. The data of comparison analysis between two groups on 3 or 6 month after intervention showed at each time point the scores of SAS and AQ20 were lower and the scores of GWB and 6 subscales were higher in the intervention group than those of in the control group, all of the differences were significant(p<0.01).Conclusion: 1. The positive psychological intervention basing on broaden and build theory of gratitude could alleviate the anxiety symptoms in COPD patients with anxiety disorders, and improving their quality of life and general well-being.2. The broaden and build theory of gratitude could be as one of guidelines for making intervention procedures, and it should broaden the research field of patients with COPD health management.
