| Objective:To learn about the medication initiation and compliance of schizophrenics in Liuyang rural communities; to describe the standardization and characteristics of medication initiation; to explore the reason and affecting factor of medication initiation failure.Methods:This research mainly adopts literature research, field investigation and in-depth interview method to investigate the medication initiation of schizophrenics in the rural communities of Liuyang city, Hunan province. Cluster random sampling produced a sample of391patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in42administrative villages of four townships. Questionnaire on medication initiation and compliance, as well as Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) were administered to these patients.Results:Among the391schizophrenics, the proportion of patients getting medicine on time (6times per year) was37.9%in2011,34.8%in2012, and43.2%in2013.6.9%of the patients never get any medicine for the past five years. The top five reasons for unclaimed medicine is not willing to/not comfortable to take medicine (23.6%), forget/miss time for claiming medicine (20.6%), hospitalization (20.1%), non-adherence (19.6%),buying medicine by oneself(14.1%). The main factors influencing the medication compliance are seeing a doctor, medication adherence, and risk behavior.Conclusions:28.3%of schizophrenics in LiuYang rural communities have standard medicine claiming. Seeing a doctor due to illness, lack of medication adherence, violent behaviors are associated with lower medication adherence. Cognition impairment, lack of understanding of drug side effects, lack of family support, and flawed community prevention and control system are the main causes leading to unclaimed medicine. |
