The Initial Establishment Of Access Database For Ulcerative Colitis

Objective: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic relapsing disease. The morbidity ofUC in China is increasing every year, at the same time, because of the urgent demandfor clinical and scientific research, organized and stored data of UC becomes more andmore important. The help of a professional and scientific database technology wasneeded by the storage of the clinical case data because of the shortcomings of Excelspreadsheets which was previously the most commonly used software by clinicaldoctors. A standard database technology needs a professional database managementsystem (DBMS). The objective of this article is to establish the Access database for UCusing Microsoft Access, a database management system which is the most commonchoice of clinical special topic database in China. Then it will be more efficient andreasonable for the clinical doctors to store and analyze the clinical data of UC, so thatgreater support is offered for clinical and scientific research.Method:1. The fields of database were designed based on the features of UCwhich include the epidemiology, symptoms, signs, laboratory examination, imagingexamination, treatment and the effect. The fields will ensure that the collection of thedata is complete.2. The database table was set up on the basis of database fields,11tableswere set up for the125fields, and the data type for each different field was designed.Use the options of fields property to modify the special field type for the purpose ofmaking each field scientific and decreasing the labor intensity of data entry.3. The relationships between each table were established logically, everysingle table is an organic entity depends on the relationships between each table.4. The graphical user interface was created by establishing the forms onthe basis of each table, and created a navigating form to put in all the forms together, itcan make the database more clean and decrease the complexity of control. And the login form was created at the same time.5. The macros were created as the required functions.6. After the establishment of database frame, the cases of the FirstAffiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University from January1st2000were searchedwith the help of Lian Zhong digitized clinical case browser, Jia He digitized medicalrecord platform and Zhong Lian hospital information system clinical work unit. Thedischarged and admitted cases with the major diagnosis of “ulcerative colitis”,“ulcerative colitis?” and “inflammatory bowel disease” were searched and analyzed.Cases with the chief complaint of diarrhea or mucopurulent bloody stool and having nolesion of the gastrointestinal tract except in colon and rectum, will be accepted to thedatabase.Result: The Ulcerative Colitis Access Database was successfully established andsaved as accdb forma. The debugging of the functions such as log in, forms open, dataentry were all successful. This database has the functions of data entry, storage, inquiry,report, input and output, and could be used for analysis of the data with a chart report.This database could be used for clinical case storage and scientific research, it alsocould be used as an auxiliary tool of the net share and teachings.Conclusions:1. Microsoft Access2010could be used to establish the clinicaldatabase for UC.2. This database has the characteristics of comprehensive data,powerful functions, tidy interface design and high level safety.3. This database will provide strong assistance and support forstorage, arrangement and analysis of the UC data.
