Objective: The study was to explore the pathogenesis role of the serum levels ofinterleukin-2(IL-2) and interleukin-4(IL-4) in the patients with chronic obstructivepulmonary disease(COPD) by measuring the serum levels of IL-2and IL-4of thepatients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD)and stationary phase at different altitude.Methods:46AECOPD patients,42patients in stationary phase and40healthy peoplein Xining City (2,260m above sea level) were selected. These patients wererespectively named moderate altitude AECOPD, stationary phase and the controlgroups.33AECOPD,24patients in stationary phase and30healthy people in HainanState (3,200m) were selected. These patients were respectively named high altitudeAECOPD, stationary phase and the control groups. Results:â‘ the serum level of IL-2of AECOPD group was significantly lower thanthat in stationary phase and the control groups in the same altitude (p<0.001); Theserum level of IL-2in stationary phase group was lower than that in the control group(p<0.001); the serum level IL-2of high altitude group was significantly lower thanthat in moderate altitude group (p<0.001).â‘¡The serum level of IL-4of AECOPDgroup was significantly higher than that in stationary phase and the control groups(p<0.001); the serum level of IL-4in stationary phase group were higher than that inthe control group (p<0.001); the serum level of IL-4in the high altitude group weresignificantly higher than that in moderate altitude group (except for the control group,p<0.001); There was no significant between the control groups at different altitudes. Conclusion:â‘ The serum level of IL-2in the AECOPD group was decreased withacute exacerbation of COPD. Serum levels of IL-2increased with acute exacerbationof COPD.The serum levels of IL-2and IL-4involved in the airway inflammation inCOPD;â‘¡The serum levels of IL-2and IL-4may be involved in the adaptiveprocesses to hypoxia of COPD in the low-oxygen and colder conditions.
