Objective: To examine the expression of Smac protein in tissue ofesophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)and high-grade intraepithelialneoplasia(HGIN), and to explore the relationship between Smac and commonclinical and pathological features of ESCC and the effect of Smac protein onoccurrence and development of ESCC in Qinghai. Methods: The expression of Smac was examined by immunohistochemistryin35cases of ESCC tissue, matched tumor-adjacent esophageal tissue,20HGIN and20normal esophageal tissue. The relationship between Smac proteinexpression and common clinical and pathological features of ESCC wasanalyzed.Results:(1)The positive rates of Smac protein expression in ESCCtissue,tumor-adjacent esophageal tissue,HGIN and normal esophageal tissuewere34.29%,82.86%,45.00%and80.00%,respectively.There was significantdifference in Smac protein expression between normal esophageal tissue andESCC tissue,tumor-adjacent esophageal tissue and ESCC tissue,tumor-adjacentesophageal tissue and HGIN(p<0.05).(2)The expression of Smac protein wascorrelated with differentiation degree, lymph node metastasis and TNM staging(p<0.05).Conclusions:(1) The expression of Smac protein in ESCC and HGIN weresignificantly lower,It might be speculated that down-regulation of Smac couldinhibit the apoptosis and promote the proliferation of esophageal squamouscells.(2)In ESCC,The expression of Smac was not correlated with age, sex andtumor infiltration depth.(3)The expression of Smac was related withdifferentiation degree, lymph node metastasis and TNM staging of ESCCtissue,The results suggest that abnormal expression of Smac protein might berelated with genesis and development, and may be an indicator for diagnosis and judgment prognosis of ESCC.
