With the rapid development of Internet and high technology in21st century, Chinese corporations are involved into the global economic system. And Chinese industrial groups are playing a more and more important role in the global value chain with the deepened reform and opening-up policy, especially after joining WTO. An industrial group consists of a number of companies within the same industry. At present, China has been one of the most important international manufacturing bases and will become the biggest one in the near future. However, Chinese industries are still located at the lowest-end of the global value chain, where they are engaging in the labor-intensive and low added value manufacturing. It is the problem confronted by the Chinese companies to achieve and enhance their capabilities and move forward to the high-end industries of capital-and technology-intensive. The lighting industry faces the same the situation. As one the lighting companies, it is a question whether our B can learn something from OEM and further carry out ODM, and catch our final destination of OBM in the end. We should carefully consider and review where to go and how to realize industrial upgrading.This article comprises of eight chapters:the first one is introduction, introducing briefly the meaning of the selected title, logic framework, research methodologies and possible innovation and limitation; secondly, it is about the basic conception and literature review, which covers the conceptions of lighting industry, global value chain, industrial upgrade, and OBM etc, as well as related theories, especially about the upgrading path from OEM to ODM, and ultimately to OBM; thirdly, it introduces the basic background information of B; fourthly, it analyzes the advantageous and disadvantageous factors of external environment during B’s industrial upgrading; fifthly, it analyzes the advantageous and disadvantageous factors of internal resources and capabilities; sixthly, it analyzes the pros and cons of B compared with key competitors, and then it uses SWOT method to decide the strategic direction of B’s industrial upgrading; seventhly, it lists the possible difficulties and counter measures during the implementing process of B’s industrial upgrading, and simultaneously it elaborates the detailed implementation plan, including content, schedule, related person-in-charge, and then raises the policy proposal; finally, it gives conclusions and the further research direction.The possible innovations of this article lie in:(1) This research makes the orientation of Chinese lighting industry in the global value chain much clearer, and proposes the considerable direction for lighting industrial cluster to realize industrial upgrading; (2) This article analyzes the state quo of B completely, and also issues instructions for the future direction of development and implementation measures;(3) The analytical method used in this article can be referred by other lighting companies to investigate and analyze their development strategies.It blocks the further study of Chinese lighting industry that the available academic research and practical data are not as plenty as other industries, as well as the author’s limited energy and capability. The conclusion of this research will be further verified with the development of statistical system and theoretical research in the near future.
