A modern sports architecture requires not only the beautiful architectural shapes, complete and perfect sports equipment, but also the pleasant and comfortable illumination environment, so the illumination design of sports architecture is put forward very high requirements. The illumination design of sports architecture need meet the illumination standard requirements of illumination. In addition it is in favour of the technical exertion of athletes and the correct judgment of referees and need to guarantee an audience good viewing effect. So, under the environment of sports architecture, the research of illumination design has practical significance.This paper firstly analyzes the factors that influence the quality of sports lighting and draws evaluations of various factors. Secondly, under the environment of sports architecture, the related contents of illumination design on illumination equipment and ancillary facilities, lamp layout, illumination systems, energy-saving lighting, illumination detection have been deeply analyzed. Then for the indoor and outdoor sports stadium, illumination schemes are respectively designed from the illumination source, light distribution curve of lamps, lamp layout, construction materials reflectance ratio, pole height, illumination control patterns. and after which using DIALux software modeling and simulation, illumination designs are compared from the lighting quality, economic efficiency and energy-saving economic benefits to ensure the better lighting design and to explore the general method of stadium illumination design. Finally, relying on the actual project and according to the general method of lighting design, taking the indoor basketball court and the outdoor football field as examples design respectively illumination schemes, and complete power distribution system, intelligent control systems and intelligent fire emergency lightening system design. Then the stadium is tested its quality of illumination to verify its’ scientific and rationality.The purpose of this study is to comprehensively and thoroughly analyse the contents involved in sports architectural illumination design. Through the illumination designs’ comparison, it is concluded the general method of stadium illumination design to provide reference materials for illumination designers and to create a secure and comfortable lighting environment.
