Y seal used in brake, which is the key component of stamping equipment, is taken as research object. The research technique of numerical simulation combined with experimental investigation is used to study the performance of the Y seal. The research results can help the design and analysis of reciprocating sealing system of Y seal.A numerical simulation model used to analyze performance of Y seal is developed, based on the mixed lubrication theory. This model consists of coupled solid mechanics analysis for Y seal’s macroscopic deformation, deformation mechanics analysis for Y seal’s microscopic deformation in contact zone, fluid mechanics analysis for the oil film in contact zone, contact mechanics analysis between the asperities in contact zone. The performance parameters such as leakage rate and friction of Y seal’s in working state can be qualitatively predicted by this model. Radial force test and reciprocating sealing bench test are conducted to verify the validity of the results predicted by the model.Base on the model parametric analysis is carried out from the perspective of sealing system and seal(in other words, from consumer and manufacturer). For sealing system, the influence of pre-compression, surface roughness, medium pressure and stroke speed on sealing performance is studied. For seal, the influence of five key structure parameters of Y seal on sealing performance is studied, and the optimum design parameters of Y seal is obtained from parameters optimization by orthogonal experiment design.The changing rule of Y seal’s material and structure during aging is studied based on hot-air accelerative aging test. A numerical simulation model used to analyze aging performance of Y seal is developed, considers the influence of aging on Y seal’s material and structure both. The aging performance of Y seal is qualitatively predicted by this model.In order to be applied in engineering, a performance analysis software for reciprocating seals is developed, friendly man-machine interface of numerical simulation models is designed by Matlab Gui, a convenient and rapid analysis tool is providedfor companiesin the development of reciprocating seals.
