With the rapid development of science, technology and market economy, the innovation of productdesign and rapid product development has become the core competitiveness of enterprises. Thelong-term design practice has proved that the product3D modeling is the key link of modernindustrial product design and development process, is also an effective design expression.With the extensive use of CAD/CAM systems in the new product development stage, the digitalproduct model has become the main output of the industrial designer. The method of traditionalhandmade is simple, but takes a long time, and the accuracy of model is not enough, also needs to betransformed into the digital product model by the reverse engineering; Modeling ideas of the existingCAD system is the geometric modeling, that requires the users have a better mathematical knowledge,With using mouse, keyboard and two-dimensional display, users can’t get a good sense of immersion;Reverse engineering and CAM just change the style of model, can’t aid designers effectively; Withvirtual reality appeared, scholars began to put forward the concept of virtual clay modeling system.Currently, tactile design systems based desktop environment has been used by the designers, and hasreceived unanimous praise.In this context, some explorations of the virtual clay modeling system have been done in this paper.Firstly, it explained what’s virtual clay modeling system, what’s composition and working principle ofthe system, and what’s the status of research on the system, then pointed out the inadequacies; Thetechnology idea of virtual clay modeling comes from the method of traditional handmade clay model,so this paper used some user-centered research methods, such as card sorting and activity-focusedresearch, to dig out the potential needs and behavior patterns of designers; People always use theirhands to complete tasks, this paper analyzed the theoretical basis of two-handed interaction, and thedevelopment of two-handed interaction in human-computer interaction, also analyzed it’s behavioralcharacteristics, cognitive characteristics and time characteristics; Finally, it proposed user interfaceprototype design of visual clay modeling system based on the physical metaphor.
